Well stone me people! :)

 

Mask, you never stop amazing me with your work, and if anyone has kept the magic going over the years, your name might just be bang ontop of the pile. I say this as someone who has of course got to know you over the years and obviously shares a passion for Rebellion... I doff my Stormtrooper helmet to you for this and all the magic that has kept the spirit burning all this time... :D

 

Floros; Krytos; people, this is excellent! Welcome home! It's just these sort of efforts that Mask has kinda been soldiering on with alone all this time! Top stuff and on behalf of all the people who still kinda have time for a tab of galactic conquest, I salute and thank you!

Edit: REMEMBER PEOPLE! Rebellion doesn't like ingame models sharing textures, it will cause you tactical game to crash as soon as it ends, so for the time being do not load Mask's models to multiple ship slots, for example ISD marks I & II, your game will crash...

The models look excellent Krytos. You must have a good 3d program, they look nicely shiny and smooth :D Don't they have a very large polygon number?

I use 3d Studio Max, the shine is just from the lights used.

With exception of the War Cruiser and Bothan Frigate, they're all around 2000 polys - some are just 10 to 20 polys over. The other two are around 2500 polys. A lot of the smoothness is from a modifier in 3ds that smooths the lighting - I'm not sure if it's supported with Rebellion (though the 3ds format carries the smoothness), though I guess I'll find out soon enough :wink:

 

Where did you find their designs? Are they suppose to be later-era ships?

 

Woo, that was hard. I started a few years back when I found stats for New Republic ships from the Black Fleet Crisis (Which is about years 16 after A New Hope). Since then I've been struggling to find pictures for them. I eventually found one of the Defender Star Destroyer/Endurance Fleet Carrier which was on the Wizards of the Coast website.

A few days ago I found all the pics I need from Cracken's Threat Dossier - and most are ugly and don't follow their desriptions (especially the original Endurance!)

 

I'm just finishing my Firespray (Slave-1) model, check it out and tell me your opinion.. It still needs some work on the back-engine-floor..

 

Looks awesome Floros, what program do you use to make your models? What's your poly count for the Firespray?

I use a 3d program called "Amapi 3D", not so known, but easy to use and saves models in .3ds format. Sometimes I also use Milkshape 3D.

My "Firespray" has around 15000 polygons and 7800 verticles, which I think are too much, but I'm trying to cut them down abit.

 

When I use the Firespray in my games, it is so small (like the Lambda Shuttle) that you can't see much detail anyway. Therefore, I don't really have to texture it, just paint it abit, and it still looks good..

 

Mask, I will install a plate under the engines, and also make two cuts on the round ship-base, where the wings come out..

Amapi 3D? Never heard of it :?

 

I've heard of and used a bit of Milkshape 3D - simular interface to Lightwave. Though in the 5 minutes I used it, I didn't get it to do anything :roll:

 

Sounds like your Firespray is well on its way. Good luck with the texturing

 

Origianally I was planning on a TC - though now I'm tempted to just make a series of cards and submit them. Still, I might change my mind again - the main problem I'm having is Imperial ships. Seeing by the NJO peroid there was little change in their fleets (not that there was any real need), there are few ships for me to change.

Oh well, I'll cross that stone when I come to it.

Floros, you could try using less sides for the spheres on your Firespray, that should severely reduce the polycount :wink:

I have the very same problem... I can't manage to apply any textures, no matter how many times I tried master Mask's tutorials :roll:

 

Look at my new Firespray. I managed to apply some textures using gmax, then I exported my model to .MD3 format. I loaded the .MD3 format to my LithUnwrap, and the textures appeared just fine in the preview. The problem starts here: when I save my model to .x or .3ds format, my textures disappear!

I didn't export my model in 3ds format, because my gmax only exports in .md3 (quake) format. Before I export, I selected all my model's parts,(with the textures on them) and saved them as "GROUP 1". Then, at the .md3 export menu, I chose:

 

The following frames: GROUP 1

Next 2 lines I left clear,

Position relative to Tag: tag_floor

Next 3 options, I removed the ticks.

 

My model looks OK at LithUnwrap preview, but when I save it to .3ds format, it looses the textures. How can I keep the textures?

Sorry, I can't access the internet from my home atm and I don't have a lot of reference material "here".

 

…and want to save your model, then enter 0 for the frames to export and convert the generated .md3 file to 3ds with Lith …

 

You shouldn’t touch anything else in that export dialog, just enter the 0 for the frames and you should get a md3 that will easily be convertable to 3ds :wink:

Hmmm.... I managed to put some textures to my model, and I also managed to insert it in the game... It looks OK, problem is that the game crashes, after the battle is over(not before or during). Any solutions? I used 3-4 .bin files for my .x file model.

Yay, there's only one thing, that can cause this.

 

I described it at great lengths in my 2nd tutorial, btw :roll:

 

One or more of your models refer to the same texture file.

 

Let's say your close model uses supercooltexture.bmp as texture. If the medium or the far model (or both) use supercooltexture.bmp as well, then you got a problem, namely the crash.

So rename the texture file for the medium and far model into supercooltexture_m.bmp and supercooltexture_f.bmp to work around that. Of course that name is too long for the 3ds format, it can only have texture files with a maximum of 8 characters (not counting the extension).

Hmm, I actually thought that I had posted the pics for this model - though apparently not . . .

 

Anyway, the model was meant to be of this - the Belarus Medium Cruiser. And from the pic, I think it's easy to see that it's one ugly ship

 

Now, for those who don't know about the Belarus, it's meant to be the New Republic's follow up to the Strike Cruiser - though 50 metres shorter with increased broadside firepower.

 

The point of this little rant is more or less to justify my model - a cross between a Strike Cruiser, what I originally imagined it to be and Eville's Belarus from the awesome Warlords mod.

 

Anyway, I guess I'll shut up and post the pics - damn it's hot today (32 degrees C)

Yep, 3D Studio as usual - I've noticed that it doesn't work well with the laptop I'm using, the prime example is when ever I quit the program I have to kill the program through the task manager after as it's still loaded in RAM. Weird :?

Ok, so my texturing got stalled when I got back to Uni last week and decided to try and work on an old model rather than remake it. So here's my take at the MC 90

Me again, well I got REALLY annoyed at a lecturer thursday and decided to draw a few pics. One of them, that I finished drawing, I decided to make today and jsut finished . . . now, whilst watching Episode IV (man, that's good inspiration :roll: )
