Tactical Combat Error

I recently got Rebellion to work on 64-bit Windows 7 and have been playing for the first time in ages, but every time tactical combat tries to start, I get an error that says: "the pixel format was invalid as specified." Has anyone uncovered any solutions?

I have this happen on my XP PC (windowed game, not full screen); but when I hit "OK" in the message box, everything works fine.

I've using XP Mode to create a virtual PC on a Windows 7 and I get the same "pixel error" message, however when I hit ok I only get a black screen. I still hear the sounds of ships arriving from hyperspace and requesting orders, but the interface never comes up.
