MrPhildevil Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hello Lavo, I've got a serious MiniDump issue. I've looked and it seems the minidump gets saved in a folder. I looked in this folder and it says I had no less than 55 minidumps since I began testing. Apart from that back to menu thingy, I may get minidumps when I start the game and it does not get the time to get to the start menu (10% of the minidumps). Also, I have a lot of loading issues (more than 50% of the minidumps). Imperial march plays and suddenly, no more sound, loading screen gets freezed. Last one of these issue is when the game is running and then randomly freeze (about 30% of the dumps) with a minidump. This is making the testing process very hard and honestly, I feel this is ruining the experience. Am I the only one getting these dumps so often? I'd love to get an open source that makes the same thing than FRAPS, so I could show you what hell this is. But really, it is very frustrating and way too frequent. I doubt anyone would be patient enough to keep this on and on...
Lavo Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I haven't been getting minidumps like that. The latest revision pretty much destroyed any save games it seems, likely due to the tech changes, you probably have but, has this been happening even with new games? I really have no idea how it's minidumping ingame, as I haven't suffered from these other than during testing things (like attempted fighter shielding) which I'm sure will minidump. The loading screen always freezes during loading; this is how Sins loads a game, as stupid as this may sound. Sins of a Galactic Empire staff.
Busser Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I've had 9 minidumps since the beginning of this month, all of them the types you mentioned. When starting the game, loading saved games, starting new games or navigating the menu. I did notice that running task-manager when doing this sometimes unfreezes the game and avoids a mini-dump. I Also make sure that nothing excessive is running in the background while starting. I actually try to avoid doing anything when the game is loading. No minidumps during the actual gameplay however. . . which was the real gamebreaker in the previous versions.
Lavo Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Seeing as how 80%+ of minidumps are caused by RAM issues, and in accordance with a theory on NU's lag that I developed earlier, I'm going to try and reduce the RAM eaten up by the galaxy backdrop of the main menu... While it might not help much, it's the only thing I can do, as I really have no idea what causes this minidump other than the game going "FFFFFF- TOO MANY PLANETS DDDD:" and crashing. MrPhildevil Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 I finally got a decent computer: 4GB of RAM and an independent and decent graphic card. So it is not like I need more to run the game. Now I'd like to try to run the game with less process running background, if possible. Don't know how I'll do that though... And yup, trying to lessen the game menu graphical load may help. About the load issues, sins sort of freeze, but then the loading bar progress and the game starts. When the dump happens, it ain't gonna load at all.
Lavo Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 About the load issues, sins sort of freeze, but then the loading bar progress and the game starts. This is absolutely normal; I've experienced flat out freezes versus partial ones when loading a Sins game on my netbook, whether it be SoGE or vanilla. I've added a less strenuous backdrop for the main menu, tell me if it helps. Sins of a Galactic Empire staff.
MrPhildevil Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Yup, I had figured it was normal By the way, this is no netbook I have over here... Edit: I did not really notice any difference, granted I'm not sure what is the exact meaning of "buffer". Still had a loading minidump though. Anyway, no time for further testing today Gotta get to work. Hava nice one!
sloosecannon Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Just judging from what you said and my knowledge of the way computers and Sins run, I'd say this is an issue with your PC. If it MD'd at the same place every time, it would be a mod/coding issue... Sounds a lot like RAM, but if you have 4 GB, that shouldn't be the issue... Sins of a Galactic Empire Mod Team Staff
Snowba11 Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Ram is always an issue with sins though, as even if your pc has 4gb sins is hardcoded with a limit of 2gb. The mod when running is already very close to the limit and this is probably whats causes a lot of problems especially on larger games later on in the game when re loading etc. Any small areas where ram usage can be trimmed it should be imo.
Lavo Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Any small areas where ram usage can be trimmed it should be imo.Unless anyone has any ideas, there aren't really any areas to trim RAM usage... The planets are what's killing the RAM; I've integrated the few TSOP elements I could into the mod (very few, the nice plus was trade/refinery ships). Sins of a Galactic Empire staff.
Snowba11 Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Would it therefore be possible to slightly trim the planets ie some less needed models or stars ? Or is there a way of making the models of the planets smaller. The ram usage is crippling games in their latter stages. Any news yet on whether the new sins add-on might address some ram issues ? Or will it just make things worse ? Actually would moving over to diplomacy not just use more ram up also ?

I have absolutely no experience when it comes to models and skins, let alone the fact that I didn't make this part of the mod. The only one who can answer this is Nova, or someone who can "read" the various models in NU. Diplomacy has had more resource optimization than Sins. I personally do not believe that Diplomacy will notably increase or decrease RAM usage in Sins. I might be wrong however. I've heard that Rebellion will have far more; though that's awhile off. Actually, making the models smaller wouldn't do any good... they still have the same resource usage... Sins of a Galactic Empire Mod Team Staff
