Tom Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Hi guys! I'm actually an old lurker of this forum from maybe... 6-7 years ago - no one you'd remember. I recognize Evaders but not anyone else, sorry. Anyway, my cousin and I fired up Rebellion the night before his bachelor party while we were hanging out and had a great deal of fun playing it as a drinking game (any construction-capable building, person captured or killed, capital ship sabotaged, or planet lost was a shot). I remembered the Warlords mod, so I bought Homeworld 2 and installed it and had some fun playing it. I'm hoping to recapture some of the magic of Rebellion in a newer game I don't have to run in VM The models in it are fantastic, and it's tremendous work. I have some different design opinions from the author (like the insane number of ships) - but I don't mean my criticism to be harsh, he/they did a great job and I'm very grateful. I'm a programmer by day - I'm searching for a new job soon, I'm doing side projects to land my dream job so my free time is on the short side... but depending on my free time, the owner's licensing of the mod (e.g. can I look at the source?), and how complex the modding system is - I'd like to see how the mod works under-the-covers - maybe if something is irking me I can change it so my cousin and I can pull off another fun gaming session. Then I saw SOGE. I've never heard of the game, and before I spend $40 on it, I'm hoping people can fill me in on it. I looked at their site and couldn't get a good feel for how the game played... Can you give me some analogies? Is it like Rebellion where there's a map, but a 3D combat 'zone' you move into? Or is it strictly Homeworld 2 - a 3D map and you do your construction/fighting inside it? Anyway, thanks for all your time and effort in keeping this site running. As I get older and more and more things change, it's nice to see some of the old haunts to still be around.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted June 26, 2010 SWR Staff - Executive Posted June 26, 2010 Sins of a Galactic Empire is the natural evolution of the Warlords mod. The mod for Sins of a Solar Empire (http://www.sinsofasolarempire.com), it is played in one 3D map. However, it is distinctly not HW2's tactical style but a more strategic game, much closer to Rebellion. Being able to zoom in and out of the entire galaxy, it is pretty amazing to watch. Nearly everything can be done in the main interface (only opening separate windows for large information - like research, diplomacy, etc) Nearly all the models have been released for use with other mods. Might want to find Eville's model pack for Empire at War, as many of those mods use his models. Tom Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Cool. I picked it up for $10, so if it doesn't work out I won't be heartbroken.
Wumpum Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 This is one of the more recent threads on here, so I am going to shamlessly hi-jack it... If you (or anyone) is interested in playing, drop me a note in this thread or a private message. I use to play a lot back in the day, and am itching to get in a multi-player game. I am usually up late eastern time...--D
Tom Posted July 9, 2010 Author Posted July 9, 2010 I played SOSE for the first time last night - it was sooooo slooooow. Maybe I had the wrong settings, but I thought I picked the largest map I could, with the fastest resources and all that jazz and it was not all that fun. I wanted to do a skirmish on the vanilla game before tryng SOGE, so I'll be trying the mod tonight maybe. I'm not sure if the mod can fix the gameplay I didn't like though...
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted July 9, 2010 SWR Staff - Executive Posted July 9, 2010 Sins isn't Starcraft... you're not going to find 15 minute skirmishes here. I like the fact that it's a longer strategy game that isn't dependent on how many mouse-clicks you can do in one minute. The larger maps are actually going to make longer games, as your ships will have to travel more.I would stick to the small or medium maps if you intend for short games.
