Rebellion Message Font: Read/Unread

I've been searching the net for about a decade for a resolution to this problem, yet have found nothing. Can anyone tell me a fix for the issue of new messages in Rebellion appearing as read when they've never been read? I'd like it to operate like it does when installed on Win 98/Me. This is making me keep an extra PC loaded with Win Me just for this issue. I would love any advice!
