jester07 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I don't know about the rest of you, but I never play with fleet sizes above small. Even with that, I think that they are far too large. In the end I always end up facing fleets made by the AI that are completely packed with cruisers and frigates so large that it slows down my computer (which takes quite a lot). I feel like setting the current small fleet size as the Medium fleet size or even better, the large, it would make a lot more sense. I like to play where each ship counts, and this is not really possible even with the current small fleet size, especially when dealing with the massive AI spammage. I know that the AI currently spams a lot of smaller ships and not many capital ships, and I am pretty sure I read somewhere that it is being worked on. I would even be happy learning where/how to adjust this for just my use if no one else agrees.
Smurfy Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Agreed, it annoys me sometimes on how little justice some games and mods give to say, an Imperial Star Destroyer. It is really powerful, a true multi-purpose warship and something to fear. Yet sometimes they are discounted as just like a "standard" ship. I use small floatilas to try and cover all the territory I have, based around up to three Imperial Star Destroyers (that's a squadron of em, but some behind border planets may only have one). Then I bring in extra support if it's needed from elsewhere.
Seatbelt Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I feel like this mod deliberately encourages large fleets. Thats the idea. You're right though in that at one point I completely stopped building frigates, because they were pointless. They died so fast I had to constantly replace them. I like that Star Destroyers are "common" though. The Empire had what.. 20,000 star destroyers? I remember reading that number somewhere. They had a preposterous number of capital ships no matter what number you talk about. Death Squadron was an SSD and 12 ISD's + support ships. They may be big and powerful, but they were also plentiful.

NovaCameron Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 Really? I use Tartan Cruisers and they work just fine. Add in a few Carraks and SDs and you have a nice sector fleet.
Seatbelt Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Really? I use Tartan Cruisers and they work just fine. Add in a few Carraks and SDs and you have a nice sector fleet. What settings do you play on and what constitutes a "sector fleet?" I play on hard/expert and I try and get by on bare minimum. I'd rather replace a ship than stall my economy to have more ships. You can always replace a frigate. But I'd rather have 8.7 crystal a second than 3.4 when my fleet gets pwned.
NovaCameron Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 Ususally 6 carracks, 12 tartans and 2-3 SDs. Remember I'm making the SW galaxy map so I have a huge economy. Which I really need to rework... I get waaaay too much resources with 40 planets... 5 of then urban planets.
Seatbelt Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Ok. My Sins experience usually devolves into one to three big fleets depending on the situation. After a huge engagement like that most of the small stuff is dead.
Sevrun Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 What's wrong with a few big fleets? my defense fleet is usually about 150 fleet supply in size with a Jedi Venator and a couple Venator cruisers + support. Don't need a really big fleet, since I don't want to scare them off. I want to draw them into the defenses, let the mines soften them up and then engage at speed while they try to retreat. My assault fleet(s) is a bit larger typically another Jedi Venator and 4 Venator cruisers, couple Acclamators, and Dreadnaughts in close formation to support each other. Used to bring Invincible heavy corvettes, but I go heavier on fighters than bombers so we can usually clear the skies without them.
X-File Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Hmmm... over at http://galactic-voyage.com/ they got an extensive ships database with all kinds of Star Wars vessel stats. If we take the factor 'passengers' into account, devide each number by a factor of 100 we might get a nice count for the fleet supply needed per vessel. A ISD-I weighs in at 97 fleet supply. An ISSD-Eclipse 150. Ships like the Tantive-IV ends up at a fleet supply of 6. Where this all goes wrong, is when we look at some of the heavier Rebellion ships: the MonCal 80's, are only 12(?!) fleet supply when we apply the same mathematics!
zoommooz Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Fleets size can be adjusted in game constants. I use small, with numbers changed to: fleetSupplyData-Small fleetSupplyScalar 0.75
toaster Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 i'm the opposite I love playing with massive fleets. everytime I start playing a mod or sins I have my fleet supply scalar set to either 10 or 15. I've seen me building fleets in vanilla sins with 16 caps a titan and maybe a few hundred support ships. only problem is the AI tends to spam certain types ie carriers so you end up with stupidly oversized fleets of carriers coming at you. yet to play a game long enough to build up a silly size fleet in the soge beta but I've managed to have 15+caps in a single fleet going by star wars legend there was something along the lines of 25000 imperial 1 star destroyers built and as for fleet structure Within sector-level fleets, the ISD served a central battleship role, being the flagship of the unit known as the "Battle Squadron." A Sector Group was responsible for patrolling a given sector and was composed of 24 Star Destroyers.[23] It was also observed to operate more or less independently and often far from support ships and facilities. Through many operations, the ISD functioned as a destroyer, a capital ship fast enough to chase down blockade runners and protect fleets. As an escort, it also supported Imperial Star Cruisers and Star Dreadnoughts in fleet combat.[40][12]
