Well since Rebellion is set after the Battle of Yavin, Alderaan would have been rubble. There would be no point having a planet you couldn't colonize or anything

I've always wondered this. Yes, it would be just rubble. But wouldn't there be a lot of rubble, just as when you destroy a planet in-game with the Death Star?

 

Personally, I think it would have been a nice touch to have one of the core sectors be composed of nine systems and the left-over rubble of Alderaan.
