SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted June 25, 2009 SWR Staff - Executive Posted June 25, 2009 Since this latest major SW book series, figured we should have a topic on it. Mostly its a continuation of the stage set in New Jedi Order and Legacy of the Force, again a multi-author tale spanning several (9) novels. To my disappoint, this time all in hardback. I won't give any judgements on Outcast, since it was the first novel. But I bought Omen today and already feel disappointed. It was $20 hardcover, yet its only 250 pages. It is small (and I don't mean small print text). Not that Outcast was that much bigger, only ~320 pages. But I don't feel like I'd be getting my moneys-worth reading them. Where are all the good sized novels like Star by Star. Not that I believe quantity > quality... but I feel that some of the larger novels really have conveyed the complex SW universe.. lots of characters, lots of action, lots of politics / deceit / betrayal. It just doesn't feel right with a book that is too short... without a complete beginning/middle/end, it is just a stepping stone of events in a longer arc. It must be complete novel in itself to be satisfying. This isn't a review of Omen itself. I obviously have to read it first. But I have a feeling I'm going to get through it pretty quickly and ask "what's next?" rather than "wow this totally makes me think / this changes everything" Evaders99http://swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif Webmasterhttp://swrebellion.com/images/banners/swcicuserbar.png Administrator Fighting is terrible, but not as terrible as losing the will to fight.- SW:Rebellion Network - Evaders Squadron Coding -The cake is a lie.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted July 4, 2009 Author SWR Staff - Executive Posted July 4, 2009 I quickly got through Omen. It met my expectations, but didn't do anything special. Much of the book set up the Sith storyline... but as a condition for future books. It didn't really go anywhere itself, didn't do anything to explain these Sith like Rule of Two. VinBadir Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I read through Omen fairly quickly as well, though it wasn't as fast paced or exciting as Outcast, it did have some very good moments. Much of the book set up the Sith storyline... but as a condition for future books. It didn't really go anywhere itself, didn't do anything to explain these Sith like Rule of Two. I think the e-book, which I've downloaded but have yet to read, Lost Tribe of the Sith: Precipice deals more with how the tribe came to be where they are in Omen. I have to say I am very happy with the way things are going in this series so far, I don't want to give anything away, but I wasn't too thrilled with the way the Legacy of the Force series was killing off characters left and right. Don't get me wrong it was exciting story telling and you didn't always know what was going to happen next, but it was a little upsetting losing some of those characters...But there are always prequel novels, like Tatooine Ghost, it was cool to have Chewie back, even though he didn't do much in that book, it was still nice to know that he was there.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted July 9, 2009 Author SWR Staff - Executive Posted July 9, 2009 A tie-in online book.. more about this other lost Sith tribe...http://starwars.com/vault/books/losttribe01.html Evaders99http://swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif Webmasterhttp://swrebellion.com/images/banners/swcicuserbar.png Administrator Fighting is terrible, but not as terrible as losing the will to fight.- SW:Rebellion Network - Evaders Squadron Coding -The cake is a lie.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted August 27, 2009 Author SWR Staff - Executive Posted August 27, 2009 Fate of the Jedi: Abyss Wow - I'm probably a bit biased (I enjoyed Troy Denning's Star by Star and his other SW novels are well worth it), but I can see where this series is going now. Maybe because the Sith get some action and that story starts intersecting with the Luke/Ben storyline. Maybe because Anakin Solo and Jacen Solo get a cameo (though as a ghost?)... Denning happened to write the books in which both die... and Raynar Thul gets a cameo. More Barabel jokes. Han Solo is classic Han, Luke gets some major action. Dennings really gets things going when s*** hits the fan. Leia didn't really feel like a major character enough to be on the book cover, but she has some nice banter with Han. Overall I really enjoyed it and didn't feel too short, it was worth reading.
