I don't know how extensive his collection was, but this is certainly a tragedy. He was truly a dedicated fan.

Any fan site is vulnerable to copyright, even ours.

While I don't blame George Lucas himself, it is obvious his lawyers are not helping.

I actually read a book for my Media Literacy class on this very subject. Each chapter of the book talked about different aspects of pop culture and the media. The chapter on Star Wars dealed with Lucas and fan sites, and it argued that while Lucas had to protect his intellectual rights, he should also allow the fans to express their love of the story via fan fiction, so long as they receive no monetary gain.

Personally, I guess I agree. I mean, so long as this guy isnt charging people to look at his work, and is not selling reproductions of his work, he should be allowed to continue. Of course, there is no law protecting fan fiction, so legally Lucas has the right to do as he pleases.

J.K. Rawling from the Potter series had a similar stance I think, where she allowed people to have fan fiction as long as they received no monetary rewards. But when they started making the movies, whoever the producer was (I forgot if it was 20th Century Fox or WB) gained the rights to stop fan fiction, which it did.

Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side!

I guess even my project is not safe.

Honestly, if they try to stop me, I'll likely concede and use what I have to make something entirely different but essentially the same. And after wrapping up, I'll likely make a mod in which you, the player, must fight against LucasArts, the corporation, for domination over the US. You'll be able to perform sabotage on the LucasArts base, abduction missions on... well :) You get the idea.

They can't stop a parody. That's free speech!

Is the word "Imperial Star Destroyer" or "Storm Trooper" copyrighted? What if someone drew up there pictorial version of those things? Is that fan made original photo copyright infringement? I can see the names like Darth Vader, and Luke Skywalker being a copyright I guess, and the story, or hard copy pictures from the movie and studio; but how far does it go? What about all those movies that are clones of other movies?

It all seems abit over board to me. Dissing your fans is not good PR.

Complete f***ing idiots. All of them. As an artist myself, this post made my extremely mad..

What if I plan to make a fan-game for a similar title like SW (I do plan to make it)? One day, they'll come and shoot me? Or what?

In the US you get letters from lawyers, everywhere else ... they shoot you (just hope they send Stormies, your chances of survival increase dramatically) :P

Is the Extended Universe of star wars copyrighted? I thought writers of books made a 'new' lore on the star wars theme using new plots and unique characters. Do they answer to LA, or are they their own?

Ya know, it really is nice to know this answer; else what a waste of time. Jeez even if it is public use??

Of course its copyright. Anything published has the Lucasfilms copyright to it, all official novels, games, etc. Pretty much the only thing that are those "philosophy of Star Wars" books. You write about Star Wars as a film or genre, but you cannot "write" Star Wars using their characters, locations, etc. The official forums (starwars.com) do not allow any kind of fan fiction to be posted. You don't write a Star Wars novel, they come to you if they want you to write one.

The whole Star Wars universe is GL's intellectual property (or Lucasfilm's), so anything based on it and made without explicit permission of GL (or LF) is a derivative work and thus is a copyright infringement. Including that guy's photo collection, this website and all fan projects and mods. One would hope to see some commom sense applied here, but apparently fans are just a figures in the budget of the big guys.

As long as the potential financial loss caused by you (which includes possible income from fan's activity if done by GL) is lower than the cost of lawyer sending you a cease and desist letter, you're safe. Otherwise you should expect some love letters.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the day Lucas dies is the day he stops f***ing up one of my favorite series.

Chaos, Panic, Disorder, Destruction.....

My work here is done.
