I glanced at the Starship Battles rules before. Now that I look more at it, it could be good for basis to implement online.

I do have one question looking over the online rulebook, since I don't have any of the miniatures myself.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/SBrulebook

The targetting and faces images seems to indicate that the ships have different grid sizes.

Is there a listing as to what these sizes are? Or is it standard based on class?

A starfighter is 1x1

A capital ship is 2x2

SSD looks to be 2x4

I guess I have to consider how the bigger ships turn, esp the ones that are not square (SSD, etc)

Going to work on some concepts, see how well this works out

the scales are as follows

1x1 fighters

2x2 corvettes, transports and frigates (millentium falcon - nebulon b)

3x3 destroyers and cruisers (ISD / mon cals)

4x4 SSD

Indeed a SSD is 4x4? It looks to me that in one of the images, the starfighters are inside that. Or perhaps I'm just seeing things.

Squares do make the calculations much easier. Even the Viscount is 3x3?

I think the rules a little simplified. Capital ships being able to hit each other at any point on the board sort discourages the idea of moving.

Me and a couple of mates have started collecting and are going to incorporate a number of ideas from Battlefleet Gothic so that the combat has a more fluid, less controlled feel to it.

heh coming off of starfleet battles converted to starwars this is horribly oversimplified :-P

I've already started writing my own rule set, unfortunately it needs a computer to organize and calculate hits and damage in any reasonable amount of time

It's been a while but the Battlefleet Gothic idea has been floated and seems to be working. Most of my mates still use the Warhammer vessels, so we're doing some conversion work with the SW vessels.

Is anyone else collecting these any more?
