SEVERE SYSTEM ERROR - Logan?

If I don't get my Metroid fangame, I'm gonna start a boycot of GM.

 

Ok, so I was making a Platformer in Game Maker, and suddenly the game froze up and restarted the computer. It asked me if I wanted to run in safe mode, run normally, or last configuration, and I chose start with last known configuration. Everything went fine for a while, but when I tried to test my mod in EaW, IT STARTED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! What's worse, my harddrive seems to lose memory each restart, but I can't find where. But I couldn've sworn it said 2.2 gigs, now it says 3.6.

 

I'm afraid to get off the computer for fear my Dad will come in and delete FoC entirely. He won't listen to me, and he doesn't understand that you can't just backup 'mods' and reinstall FoC-I've got a lot of map editor edits and ALO viewer textures in the data folder, all the patches have been asimialated into the game and it would take the world's greatest H4XX0R 5UR60N to backup ALL my files.

 

Any tips? :-\

No, its very possible to backup FoC.

I did it. You can do it too

 

Get an external harddrive and simply copy your entire FoC directory over.

Then reformat, reinstall, and move it back.

 

That's kinda what I did.

I don't have an external hard drive.

 

I just remembered something, in one of the FoC folders, there's a backup .exe. If I was wrong and the problem was with the .exe, that would fix it...But that wouldn't explain why the mod launcher didn't work...

1. Uninstall Game Maker (after putting your GM files on a floppy or CD). If this works, then its a GM problem, and I have no idea what to do, except switch to RPG toolkit. If it doesn't, move on to step 2.

 

2. copy all modified XMLs and maps, textures, models, etc. (everything in the folder your game refers to when you play) into a folder that is not in the Lucasarts folder.

3. Uninstall FoC, then reinstall.

4. Before adding files back in, TEST THE GAME and make sure it works. If it works, move onto step 11. If it doesn't, move on to step 5.

 

5. Uninstall FoC and EaW.

6. Reinstall EaW.

7. Reinstall the EaW update.

8. Reinstall FoC.

9. Reinstall the FoC update.

 

10. if you had no problems with steps 5 thru 9, move on to step 11.

11. Begin adding your modified xmls back in, one by one. Each time you add one in, test the game. If it hasn't any problems, you're fine. If not, its faulty XML

It's most likely not a GM problem, GM is better than RPG toolkit.

I think the only realistic option IS to reinstall the EAW/FOC games. Make a back up to another folder first though. By the sounds of it you only have one physical drive though, so I guess to another folder is your only option,.. Unless you got a DVD writer and can copy your modified files over to a DVD.

 

This GM software sounds terrible .. remind me not to use it !

Uninstalling GM will not fix a FoC problem. I may sound very ignorant to you, but I almost think I'd rather lose FoC than GM. I dunno...maybe not...You guys are gonna be pissed at me now...

I have two hard drives...I guess I never thought of that. :

 

It's AWESOME. I believe the problem was that I had a constantly changing variable in question constantly, requiring the computer to stop and think over what the variable is while writing it. Just be careful how you use the step even, and you're good.

Or try defragging, but not sure how much good that will do.

Seriously, there must be another way. My Dad said to reinstall FoC without keeping mods in their old folders, but that won't change a thing. I think it's a registry problem. Logan, what'd you do when this happened?

Gamemaker is on the C drive. How could it even affect FoC on the F drive?

I doubt the program's existence is what's affecting my game. It's something that happened, not something that's happening! I think the computer had some registry or system error that's preventing FoC from running.

Its probably that - a corrupted registry.

So, since you have two harddrives, format the one with EaW/FoC on it after backing everything you need up.

I doubt it's an EaW problem-Though I gave out my EaW disc, so I couldn't test.

Well, you'll can uninstal GM and installing GM PRO, hopefully that will fix everything lol.

Actually I believe it's merely a registry update, no actual program download.
