New Faction

So I'm adding a CIS remnant faction. I made the units, made the structures, made the music, and now I'm making it skirmish playable. I've done everything right, the CIS command center is a clone of the Droidworks, the Multiplayer marker data is set, the buildpad data is set, but whenever I play as the CIS in skirmish, all I have are a few Battle droids. What am I doing wrong?

 

OFFTOPIC:LOL, the AI really stinks. I was able to beat the Empire with only two BD squads! I better tone those things down a little, LOL, I wanted them to be cheap!

Make sure to set the structures to have a buildpad and reference them unless you want them un-rebuildable...(gonna change that with my Mandalorian Faction).

 

You may also want to check the individual buildings...

 

I'm drawing blanks here cause as soon as I stuck my buildings into multiplayer marker data pouf it works.

If it still doesn't work, worst comes to worst, put the buildings as the starting units.

I fixed it, with the help of D803.(We PMed each other a lot)

This was a while ago, but since you brought the topic back...

 

In Multiplayer_Structure_Markers.xml, don't just add your faction's barracks(just using it as an example) to "Barracks", also add it to "Team_00_Barracks", "Team_01_Barracks", and "Team_02_Barracks". The same applies for all buildings.

 

Now I have a new problem. I copied all the Hutt turret stuff, replaced all references to "Hutt" or "Hutts" in the duplicates with "CIS", and added the turrets in their right place for the CIS in GroundBuildablesSkirmish.XML. I can capture build pads, but not build on them.

 

It's so annoying. :'(

I have land skirmish with a new faction working too, except two issues:

My starting units do not appear

Build pads can be captured but not built on (same problem you guys have it seems)

 

Space skirmish with a new faction works except a few issues:

Starting units do not appear

All props (asteroids, asteroid mines, turrent build pads) do not appear, only the starbases appear.

 

I'm also trying to get the AI for the new factions working, since they are not reb or imp factions just renamed but entire new factions.  Does anyone know exactly what xmls need to be edited (for faction names) in order to have AI working for new factions?

 

In GC, everything works in space and on land, except for one problem.  I have two entirely new factions, no rebs, imps or consortium on my GC campaign and as soon as I capture a planet (no matter what faction I play with) the game ends and says I lose.  I have the victory conditions set as controlling all planets but it seems to ignore it.

 

I think we need to work on this as a community, it would certainly help things to get going towards a community that is focused on grouping together, rather than every man for himself.  Coding isn't one of my strongest areas that I can help with, but I am working on a UV Mapping tutorial that I believe everyone will find useful for their mods.

Still, I get the damn GC lose error.

 

I don't know how I got it to work myself...It seems you all did the same thing.

how did i miss this in multiplayer structure markers... lol, well thx, i havent sorted the turret pads yet so ill look into them, i cant seem 2 get GC to work tho, i can select the side but then the advanced options and start game buttons become greyed out and un-pressable. i think it may be cos the game doesnt know what planets to give me and units and stuff, but i dont really know where 2 set this?

I agree, but

What good is UV wrapping if you don't have any tools to UV wrap with? There aren't enough modelers. What I think the community needs most right now is a free modeling tool.

Yes. Which faction did you copy? I think the problem is with your campaign. Is it an exact replica of the others, exept for the Faction tags? GC works PERFECTLY for my CIS remnant...Except for the buildpads....grrrrrr.....

You need to make a new GC for your faction...That probably didn't make much sense, but look in the GC XML(forgot what it's called, lol) See how each faction has it's own GC, but they're all identical except for the faction tags?

Have you tried blender?

 

I would also be willing to uv unwrap anyone's models for them if they could help me with some coding a completely working faction.  I don't think an exchange of services has ever harmed anyone. :)

blender doesnt donvert to .ALO

i made a nice T-16 model in it once, only it coulnt be converted...

 

This is the problem that I heard the other day.  "The EAW modding community is short on modelers because there are no exporters for other free modeling programs."

 

This is not a shot at you, but this is the problem with this community.  YOU DON'T NEED 3DS MAX TO SUCCEED IN MODDING EAW OR FOC, what you need is someone who can export models in 3ds to .alo for you.  Blender can uv map and can also export to .3ds or .obj (without uvs).  One of the modelers on the UEAW team has blender and models perfectly fine with it.

exporting an *.obj made from someguy with blender isn't much different from exporting a warlords *.obj...so, you can pratically get anyone who does warlords conversions to do that for you...

 

I would do the faction....I've worked *most* of it out. Just need to test the GC stuff.

Sadly I can't model for shit >.< I suck at most art other than sketches. (which I suck at, but pretend to pass)

Blender doesn't save .ALO. I'm an empire at war modder, which means, currently, any modeling program that saves anything but ALO is crap. If I were doing something different, I would look into it.

Blender can uv map and can also export to .3ds or .obj (without uvs).  One of the modelers on the UEAW team has blender and models perfectly fine with it.

Yes I made my own GC specific to my faction, I even made a totally NEW GC with all-new planet layouts but meh, it doesn't work. Maybe I'll have to get rid of its alliances... >.<

 

This is obviously the easiest thing to get working (the buildpads probably the hardest).

 

Ok....lets work together...If noone's noticed, check the "I have been convinced" thread...there its got my working Buildpads (well, working enough for my liking, you can build from them as well as capture).

Alliances work. One day I tried making the Rebels allied with black sun, just for fun. Yeah, it worked awsomely.

I can convert models and skins for anyone who wants a model exported to alo format.  As for an alo exporter for blender, all I can do is smile and say 'if you only knew'. :)

Make sure that you have the new faction you created in your enemy's enemies list and your enemy in your faction's enemies list.  I had two new factions working and when i attacked with one faction, the game would throw an exception, however if I attacked playing the other, it would work fine.  That's when I realized that the game's AI, if attacked by a faction that is not an enemy, cannot fire on them so it will throw an exception before even going into battle.

You had buildpads working?  In skirmish????

 

Let me check it out.  We do need to code a new faction together as a community so that everyone can use it.  As well as get together and form some kind of think tank so we can try implementing new ideas and pseudo-new-abilities.

I need someone's GC with a new faction to work off of, take my turrets as advance payment...(I still don't get the difference...I think that we are all forgetting something in the turrets, as well as the conquests...) Yes my turrets work in skirmish

 

Does anyone know exactly what xmls need to be edited (for faction names) in order to have AI working for new factions?

Factions.xml/Expansion_Factions.xml tell what AI it uses. You can choose any of the existing AI types and add to it, they seem to work for skirmish - they try to build the stuff from the other faction but can't, so they revert to builing stuff from their own faction. Apparently the AI are active in GC as well...I was playing against my new faction and it exceptioned - meaning, the AI actually moved its fleet to attack. (The only reason it ever exceptions now, I've played GC completely without it using every single unit, no exception...well at least the exception told me one thing >.<)

I should probably add that everything that belongs to my factions (for now while i'm testing this out and trying to get everything working) is affiliated.  One side affiliated with all rebel and the other with all imps and I have a campaign in GC set up with only these two sides against each other.

 

The game doesn't end in one day but it does end whenever I take over a planet. :(
