So I'm at work and thinking about what to do next, and I have a flash of brilliance.

 

I think I may have figured out how to do prefab garrison structures.

 

Essentially, what you would do is turn the buildings into units. Use smaller models, and restrict their build options, give them less hitpoints. But you give them essentially the same attributes as a unit, except that they can build stuff, and not move.

 

I haven't tried doing it yet, but I'm going to work on it over the next few days. Please post thoughts.

I think I figured out how to make this work.

 

What I'm going to do is make the Command Center a buildable unit. It'll use four command points on the ground. Now, what will happen is it will have a build menu with custom units just for the Garrison Base. These custom units will be exactly like the regular units, except that they will take significantly longer to build, cost more, and they won't count against your population. Also, I'm thinking about giving them unique icons.

 

I know people are looking at this. I just need someone to tell me it won't work and why.

Not quite. In the books they talk about prefab garrison bases. Essentially, a way to establish a foothold on a planet.

 

In a way, it is RTBB, but different. This would have it's own limited set of units that you'd call in like reinforcements, except they wouldn't count against your population cap. It gives you the opportunity to change tactics on the fly. The flipside is that it'll be so prohibitively expensive and so pop-cap killing that using one or losing one is a huge investment or loss. A Garrison Base will allow you to build five types of units that don't count against your cap. The difference is that these units will be more expensive and take more time to build than their counterparts. However, some of the bigger units or more fun units you will still need to build elsewhere. For example, right now I've got the Imperials building Stormtroopers, E-Web Troopers, TIE Crawlers, AT-STs, and M1s. The Rebels can build Infantry, Plex Troopers, T2Bs, AACs, and T4Bs. Diverse, and it gives you a lot of different ways to approach things.

 

Also, I'm going to extend this to the base buildings too, so you get your spawned units and then can build additional defenses. I feel like this could totally change ground combat.

Sounds fairly cool, although you should give the empire the M2s at the mobile base to counter the T4B's

Prefabs building vehicles?

 

I think it should be diverse infantry options. Like, give it some single troop units that cost the same as a squad, but are elite and suited for special roles.

Yeah that would be cool maybe the elite storm troopers their is only 3 in a group but they are the eqivalent of 1.5 squads of rebel infantry.

I meant like an 'Imperial Engineer' who can slice into vehicles(Chewie cod) and repair vehicles, and an 'Imperial Sniper', who is a sniper, and an 'Imperial Anti-Armor Trooper' who wields a rocket launcher, etc

How about...it just releases units for you to play with via Executor Deploy Code.

That wouldnt work unless you had new models add to they system as thier is no anti armor storm trooper, the others would work but would almost feel half finished using ingame models.

I had this idea once, it should require to have to have a Star Destroyer in orbit... but how would you get it too work... I mean prefabs are... pretty big...

Yes, but you need to model that. I only skin. I'd prefer it to, though.

I recall that some thing similar to that was in Force Commander. Only it looked similar but not as big. Perhaps we could base a new model on the one in Force Commander - or a scaled down version of that drawing. (Think that might be too big to fit on an EAW map)
