Hardcore gamers spend way more per capita, but there aren't enough of them to fuel the industry. It's mass market fringe/casual gamers who really pay out, even though they only buy one or two games a year. Same goes for Mac and Linux. You are right about the gaming market, Microsoft made the brilliant move of creating DirectX back in 1995.
