Computer fan and pc cooling

Recommended Posts

@Logan - maybe you can't afford a new computer but surely you can abd SHOULD upgrade the cooling system for your PC. This does not have to cost the earth to do. Just common sense on fan placement and what type of fans to put in the machine to get the correct air flow. Looks like you need to get some heat off your CPU. Perhaps re bonding it with some new heat sink paste will help also.

Ok, there seems to be a problem here with my PC, then. The fan is running really hard right now, and all that's open is internet explorer. ???

any ideas why this would happen?

It's almost like the PC's overreacting...

I have a 3.0 gigahertz processor, windows XP, and an NVidia GT 7800 9X Video card with the video card update that came out this september.

Is it in a hot place?

Does it have enough ventilation?

Is it old?

Is the shell fully sealed except for the back?

1. No.

2. the area is a bit confined...

3. 5 months old. Custom ordered.

4. There's either an intake in the front on the bottom, but other than that, yes.

When I made that post, the hotmath.com website was open, though it was hardly hightech. the fan speeds up when I use photoshop as well.

Have you given it a quick clean?? You'll be surprised how much dust can accumulate (even in a fairly short amount of time).

Oh and with regards to whats running. You'll find theres usually a hell of alot of other things that are running. Have you tried CTRL+ALT+DELETE (Pressed 1 time only), to check what tasks are running?? Also how many icons are in the bottom right hand corner??

Yeah, I tried that. Just the sound system. (and Norton Anti Virus)

I'll see if I still have problems after I try what DragonShadow suggested. The PC is in a Computer Desk right now; but we're moving it to a better ventilated setup soon.

I had a Dimension 8300 with the same problem. High temperatures or confined space (especially combined), and that fan was louder than a jet engine... ;D

Logan your best bet would be to do exactly what you said - put the unit in a well ventilated part of the room - avoid hiding the unit underneath computer tables too. These places can make the system run hot - gathers dust easily and has a lack of air ventilation.

If you fancy investing in a bit of cooling - there's some pretty good solutions on the market - would be a good investment what with you running a Geforce 7 in that machine too - as they can run hot. By also which check the cooling on your GPU also.

My other half has often talked about water cooling - it supposed to be really good - but there is other solutions besides you should consider. Its important - your protecting the life of your PC at the end of the day.
