New Icon

I've added a fighter unit to EaW, and I'd like to add an icon, as well, since the A-wings being shown is a tad confusing. 

 

Anyhow, I looked at that tutorial, but frankly, I'm still lost. I got to the point of opening the TGA file creating and adding my icon, but I'm not sure what programs to use. Someone referred to "Gimp" and an MTDEditor, neither of which I know where to find. Anyway, anyone giving me a simpler breakdown of adding an icon would be greatly appreciated.

MTD editor, go to Mike.nl's site (its got a whole bunch of ther sweet tools)

GIMP, google it. Or google GNU Image Manipulation Program.

That was incredibly helpful, and I managed to get the icons I wanted in game, and it went well, save for one little problem: They have a black background that I can't figure out how to get rid of. Any ideas?

When you create your new icon you need to create an alpha channel for it, then import/load it into the MTD editor and check the results using either psp or ps. If the background is gone then all has gone well (it took me about 8 attempts before I managed to get it right, but I'm using Paint shop pro, not photoshop).

Alright, I attempted that, but with no luck. I'm using GIMP: Layer > Transperency > Add Alpha Channel, but even after saving and importing, I still have the background.

you have to set a certain color to be discarded, I think. (sort of like green screen special effects.

If you need any help with icons in the future, I can make some Icons for you.

Bah, forgot to post that I finally figured it out, heh. Enough playing with GIMP got me the effect I wanted.
