Debugging-I'm sick of it, and ready to quit modding

IE sucks..

 

If you use Firefox it will show you the line and column that the error occured in. If you use a Editor like UE32 or Dreamweaver this comes in handy as you can go right to the line and fix. UE32 also has XML support and it auto corrects syntax errors and other common errors.

So, how would one go about fixing an XML with Dreamweaver? I want to know how these advanced programs work.

Alright, this is CRAP. No one may use the below code, but please fix it. If you do fix it, I will mention you in the credits.

You use variants too much, even when making a unit thats totally different...I find it hard to find to root of the problem that way.

Most freeware notepad replacments have support for XML editing. So they should have debugging tools. Just not geared towards EaW.

google for a freeware notepad replacment.

I personally use Notepad++, though I use it for it's light memory usage and very wide support of various file formatting, and I'm sure there are much better XML editors out there.

 

For your current problem, are you sure none of the other files have syntax errors?

 

For future developing, backup working copies of your files frequently (NOT overwritting older backups), and check for basic syntax errors in Firefox/IE/Opera even more frequently.  Then if you have problems use a diff program (like this one) to see what you changed.

 

For more advanced, setup a version control like Subversion (not necessarily for the faint of heart).
