Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 OK, I have a PS2 model SCPH- 70001. I want to be able to play my PS2 game online. I am on a wireless internet connection through a router and the other computer is connected with an ethernet cord. My PS2 has an ethernet plug on the back of it but my router will only allow one ethernet cord, and the other computer is already using the port. How could I connect my PS2 to the internet so I could play online? I checked some websites but the adapters (like the Linksys WET11) cost $50+... Ghostly_Substance Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 Wireless net that fits into the PS2 or just unplug the cord from the computer to the PS2 like I did. Would you be playing both the PC and PS2 or just focusing on one then the other? I mainly focused on my PS2 when playing online games but they just lacked (SOCOM, iditos online) and I just went back to PC. Sorry if this didn't help but this is what I did just unplug the cord and plug it into the PS2. : -One Empire falls another riseshttp://myanimelist.net/signature/EuroSubstance.png http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/os/type/2/ghostlysubstance.png
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 1, 2006 Author Posted October 1, 2006 (edited) My PS2 and computer are in 2 seperate rooms...and my dad would get mad if I screwed up his internet...Is it possibile to do this: http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n251/Master_of_Tofu/Router.jpg The Cord splits into 2 different pieces. Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 why don't you buy a Wireless connector for the PC and move the Ethernet Cord or you just move the PS2 into the computer room. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!
Ghostly_Substance Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 ^ Spam, As I said that if you have a wireless router just get a wireless internet thingy made especially for the PS2 or find one that works. If they have none in any computer stores then you know that shops are still stuck in the past -.- -One Empire falls another riseshttp://myanimelist.net/signature/EuroSubstance.png http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/os/type/2/ghostlysubstance.png
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 why don't you buy a Wireless connector for the PC and move the Ethernet Cord Unfortunately, this is my dads equipment, and you know how some are about "fancy" equipment. He would never get wireless internet for his computer...thats just the way he is. you just move the PS2 into the computer room. We live in an apartment so space is limited. The room the ethernet is in is a spare room with my dads computer and there is barley enough room, the rest of the room is piled up with boxes... SirNuke Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Buy a network switch (such as this beast). Plug a (probably short) cable from the router to the network switch. Run a cable from the switch to the PS and another cable from the switch to the computer. It doesn't matter what cable plugs into what port on the switch. You can, obviously, plug more computers into the switch if you have the necessary cables. If you have gigabit ethernet (on the computer), you might consider getting a gigabit switch. Judging by your setup however, you probably don't (and it probably wouldn't be any faster if you do have gigabit ethernet on your computer). NewEgg has cables. Buy a Cat5e or Cat6 (Cat6 doesn't have any true advantages in your setup, but it's probably a bit more expensive). However, regular Cat5 won't perform as well as Cat5e (though I'm pretty sure they aren't sold anymore). I would also recommend buying enough cable to avoid a fridge or microwave by at least 3 feet (if you happen to be running by one). Zing!
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 So I can still have wireless internet? So all it (the newegg item)does is make more ethernet slots avalible to me? "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
SirNuke Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 So I can still have wireless internet? So all it (the newegg item)does is make more ethernet slots avalible to me? Yes and yes. The router still connects through the wireless internet, and the switch allows more devices to connect to the router. Zing!
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 Is it two internets running at the same time or do you just switch between the two so only 1 runs at a time? "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
SirNuke Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 Assuming the device connecting your computer to the Internet is in fact a router, the switch allows multiple devices to connect the router (which masks all devices as a single device). To check open a command line prompt on the computer (Start->Run... and enter cmd.exe) and type ipconfig (+ enter). Under a line labeled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: (or similar) there should be a line that is IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : num.num.num.num. Go to whatismyip.com. If the IP Address whatismyip gives is different from the IP ipconfig gives, then the switch will work correctly as I described. For best results, paste the results of ipconfig and whatismyip here and I can give you my recommendation (to copy stuff from the command line, right click in the window, select 'mark', select the text to paste and press enter). For security reasons, I recommend removing the first number from each IP (ex: for 128.256.130.64 use .256.130.64). Zing!
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 ok, here it is: ipconfig .168.0.3 Whats my ip .42.151.243 "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted October 10, 2006 SWR Staff - Executive Posted October 10, 2006 A switch is all you need. The router should assign you an IP, looks like it is doing that ... my guess is that it is: 192.168.0.3That is a simple local network address and cannot be used for people to address your computer outside of your router Evaders99http://swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif Webmasterhttp://swrebellion.com/images/banners/swcicuserbar.png Administrator Fighting is terrible, but not as terrible as losing the will to fight.- SW:Rebellion Network - Evaders Squadron Coding -The cake is a lie.
Jedi Master Tofu Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 So I can't have the PS2 internet and the Dell's(my dads) internet running at the same time? "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted October 11, 2006 SWR Staff - Executive Posted October 11, 2006 Yes you can. You just need switch so you can have more than one ethernet port to connect to Evaders99http://swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif Webmasterhttp://swrebellion.com/images/banners/swcicuserbar.png Administrator Fighting is terrible, but not as terrible as losing the will to fight.- SW:Rebellion Network - Evaders Squadron Coding -The cake is a lie.
