Jedi Master Tofu Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 For the past couple of years, my computer has been making a high-pitched hummming noise when it starts up. The computer will not start up for about 3 min then all of the sudden it will boot up and work normally. I'm not sure what this is. I have checked to see if it was the software installed, my RAM, my fan, or my video card. It was none of them. I will try to post a recording of it if I can get it again. Any ideas as to what this may be would be nice. Thanks "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
Kelathin Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 What's your internet connection? 56 k? http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....
Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 what does that have to do with it? try checking the Processor and it's fan it could be that. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!
Kelathin Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Do you remember the screaching sound that dial up made? Could be processor fan with something stuck or something http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....
Lord_of_the_Sith Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 True check the processor.Try to remove the fan attached on the top of it and clean up everything from dust and ect. You will sure receive benefits at least from the cleaning as dust is the worst enemy of chips.
Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 yeah but that awful sound wouldn't be from Dial Up not BEFORE the computer is switched on and the connection made. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!
Kelathin Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Well what do you think the sound is? . Running off a sound isn't very detail and could be any number of things He says it's not the software installed, RAM, fan, or video card Assuming he's right, and he did checks properly. I'm going to guess Floppy or Cd/dvd rom drive has something loose as you can hear those things spinning at start up http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....
Lord_of_the_Sith Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Maybe.Have tried to have your computer opened and stay near it when start to try to indentify where the sound came from? It's just an idea.
Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 my dad who repairs pc says to do what lord of the sith suggests and try and find the location but he says it maybe that your CPU's fan maybe catching something. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!
Kelathin Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Lol, I repair computers for School and library, but really online help isn't the best. Once again you guys, he has said "I have checked to see if it was the software installed, my RAM, my fan, or my video card" so that cpu fan maybe catching maybe irrelevant because he already checked it. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....

Jedi Master Tofu Posted September 26, 2006 Author Posted September 26, 2006 Is it even slightly possible to get no spamming from you for once chesse? ;D SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM FACT: did you know spam is also a fake meat? ALL RIGHT, BACK ON TOPIC! I switched from my integrated sound to my sound card and I havent heard from it since. (at least from what I remember) Could it be that? Kelathin Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 it could be... but seriously that was the last thing on my mind to check. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....
Jedi Master Tofu Posted September 26, 2006 Author Posted September 26, 2006 Thats the only software I didn't check (besides xp itself) I mean, seeing that a did a Guttman 35-pass technique to wipe the hard drive, you would think it would be a hardware problem. I'll keep an ear out to see if it does it again. Ill switch between the two drivers for a couple of days to see if it does it anymore. Feedback on other problems it may be would be nice, just in case the audio drivers aren't the case. "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
Kelathin Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Before xp starts it's typically almost all hardware based sounds. It could range from floppy disk to processor fan. Most sounds are lower pitch because they are spinning parts in say the cd rom, high pitch could just be your computer. However assuming it wasn't like that, it is an error. Good luck http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n36/DarkEmpireSPG/kelathin2.jpgI shall Name him MiniMe....
Jedi Master Tofu Posted September 26, 2006 Author Posted September 26, 2006 I'm thinking it my be my power supply but I don't know how much voltage it can take... "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Erm well there should be a label on the power supply its self saying what it is if not just explore the system tools and see if you can find it. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!

Grand Admiral Thrawn 889 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 do you leave the disc in the disc drive when you have the pc turned off? it could be that? http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n292/Admiral_Antilles/Thrawncopy.jpghttp://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3269/pffuserbar2globalmodnx9.jpg I Support the Resistance!

Jedi Master Tofu Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 Sorry for double posting... I tried to record it when I started up my computer today but it was to high-pitched and the recorder wasn't close enough so I will try again :'( "The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates" - Dave Barry.
Guest Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 enviorment shouldn't effect much, especially computers and walkmans. Unless of course you keep your computer outside When there is a problem with my computer I ask my dad who knows just about everything to do with computers and math stuff
