Oh well, mistakes happen. If it were me I would have edited the wrong file and caused my computer to go into an endless start up-shut down cycle for 15 hours. And if you think its bad that you lost 200 posts think about fosh...800

Oh I definitly wasn't complaining, I was just getting to the fact that I wanted to know what the end result of said efforts will be before continuing my contributions.  If we are switching boards methinks you will probably have a clean database you are starting from (unless you have a programmer who can convert the data).  I feel like I'm in a limbo state ATM, until the "powers that be" inforum us commoners what the final word is.  ;D

I think VB is the way to go - I have never talked to any of you about this but I used to run several web sites and have compared each of the leading forum software vendors available. As a web master I ran a few techy sites for software and hardware problem solving sites.

I have installed and ran

Invisionboard - 2.0 is a great version and has good features - very dynamic and can be modified to your tastes via addons/mods you can install. Any guy who knows XML Coding can do it.

PHPBB - its, FREE and good, but its a bit flacky. Can be modified to your needs via mods and addons. - Can be a bit unstable though. - when adding mods to it.

V Bulletin Boards. Rock Solid. Can be modified and changed to suit your needs. Plenty of features and looks great. Downside the licence is very expensive. - But easy to moderate / Administrate and use.

Out of all of these I used Invisionboard and used to write XML code for mods / Addons for the software - its VERY easy to use and not too expensive.

So for me it would be eithewr VB or preferably Invisionboard 2.0 :)

IBP support sucks. Not to mention.. every release they put out is hackable. What I mean by that is there are exploits discovered within days of each release. Vb on the other hand has NO exploits out. The reason is that the code is so tested and reversed and so on. They have a great development team over at vb. When a outside exploit is discovered they patch it the next day. Vb also offers more out of the box control and features than ANY other forum/cms. The licsense is not that expensive. Its comparaable to buying a copy of Windows XP.

Also.. they have a converter for the database. Meaning that we would be converting from SMF to Vb.. keeping all posts and members.

YES. But VB is pretty expensive. Do you want to seriously lobby your members to cough up that kind of money for a licence ? - there are different licences available including a life time one. In the long term its a worth while upgrade its a rock solid board and pretty customisable and has lots of plugins you can add to the site features. I only quibble about the cost of a licence and exactly who will pay up for it.

Considering if you were going to ask the members to donate to the cause and raise the money for the licence then its great - out of all the members you are supposed to have here and the amount who are active each member would only need to donate a certain amount of money in any case.

As I said before, I'd be willing to donate to the cause of getting a new board system.  I agree with z3r0x that if you are truly invested (time and energy) in something, you might as well spend a little money on it to make it great.  If that is the decision let me know, and how much it costs...maybe $160 is lot of money to some people, but *shrug*.  If you have 32 people pitch in $5 you're there.

Ok I'll stop "stirring the pot", I know I'm just some noob to these boards anyway.  Hope this gets resolved sooner rather than later  ;)

Well ]V[Zaknaril nobody is considered a noob here. Interesting idea you have there.... what can I say - we try to survive as we can but we also try to evolve as long as we have a good time.

We can do more with Vb, thats the main reason to switch. Not to mention it has WAY more features that we can use and for the members to use. Its has the best security of any forum on available. Its user friendly, looks great its got one of the best support teams behind it. You know sometimes asking for things is a great way to get things in return. Send emails to PG or LucasArts or your grandma. Who knows maybe someone will send you a fat check for $160.00.

That is the greatest thing about these forums. I just hope they can fix it and maybe get all the old threads back.
