The Emprie actually have an advantage using fighters and bombers already. As a rebel, the opening move in any space battle  (as least against the AI and I would think the same applies to some player) is to frantically get all you fighter/bomber to the back of the formation or out of the way so they don't get wiped out by the Tartan rush in the first 30 seconds. The Empire on the other hand, have a easier time at it. First, their fighter spawn near their ships and is not lined up like targets right in front of their formation. Second with the actaul launch cycles. The Corvette rush will not be as desvastating since it will only be able to take out the first launch cyles at best before you have a chance to take them down.

I think there is a fairly simple way to make fighter useful again.

1) Drasticlly reduce the effectiveless of Corvette/Tartan against Fighters so the only effective means to take down enemy fighter is with your own.

2) Increase Fighter effectiveless against bombers so it's more effective than Corvette/Tartan.

3) Reduce Corvette/Tartan effectiveless against bomber to a level were it's better than Capital ships but not as effective as Fighters.

I think these can be easily done in a mod so it would be simple to try.

A more realistic approach is to do the above and give the Capital ship one or two hardpoints that would mount a slightly less effective version of the Corvette/Tartan laser.

Using a currently day example. Lets consider US carrier group. Fighters are most effective in taking down enemy fighters and bombers. Bombers and capital ships (consider antiship missile as turbo lasers) are most effective against enemy capital ships. Escort vessels (even those mounting the powerful Aegis system) is not your priamry anti aircraft platform. It's more of a close in defense for any enemy bomber/missile that makes it thru the fighter barrier and your capital ships while mounting anti aircraft weaponary, is pretty much a last ditch defense.

I will have to try it. I seemed to be doing very well usuing a x/y wing combo with an a wing squad or 2 and just a couple neb frigs. Corvettes seemed to be too much money for the equivelent numbers of fighters but i didn't know about the whole 1/2 strength = loss rule. It seems when i use corvette class ships on enemy fighters they do good but not as good as i expect from an anti fighter ship. However when the enemy uses them its seems like they take out huge numbers of squadrons in seconds. Maybe its just me but i didn't like spending 1000 on a gunship when i could get 4 xwing squads

gunships are obsencely overpowered  :P it takes forever to kill a gunship even with star destroyers. Fighters are pretty usless too. They seem to be only effective against other fighters especially since every rebel capital ship can destroyer fighters with relative ease. And Star destroyers should be given at least one laser cannon hardpoint preferbly two. It's common sense to install point defense laser cannons on large capital ships. They have them in the movies so why not in the game(s)? bombers need a little bit more beef to them bombers are very limited in there usefullness Unless you have a freaking swarm of them they are just slow moving cannon fodder.  :P X-wings should also pack a little more powerfull punch with a proton torpedo ability. It would be similar to luke's lucky shot but not as powerfull or as accurate. TIE bombers also need a concussion missile ability in addtion to there regular bombs. TIE bombers are equipped with proton bombs/torpedos, concussion missles, and 2 laser cannons.

tell that to the builder of the death star. also most of the big imperial ships didn't have much of a defense against fighters thats why TRD (trench run disease)worked so well ;D

TRD is a myth. In most of the movies fighters are gunned down by large capital ships. In episode 3 when anakin and obiwan were approaching the invisible hand there were lasers flying past them everywhere neatly hitting them. In ESB the Millienum falcon takes numerous hits from the pursuing star destroyers using point defense lasers.

for RotS all i can say is.....bad pilots?  i mean who flies straight towards a target unless you want to die. as for ESB wasnt the tie fighters that were doing all the damage? with the cap ships getting the rare shot to hit falcon? but then i havent watched that film for ages so....

but yeah TRD really did work through mainly because the empire was too stupid to put some decent anti- starfighter guns on there ships. so for a cap ship to hit a fighter you need two things a really really good gunner and a really really bad/stupid pilot.

Im going to have to disagree with the empire didnt put any anti fighter weapons on board they did and it worked.

The reason they didnt put any on the death star is because they didnt know that the port was a weakness if that port wasnt their it couldnt have been stoped.

yeah thats true but they also didn't think a small one man fighter could be any threat or they'd have a tighter defense...

TRD worked on any thing bigger then say a Victory-Class SD(through it might work on ships smaller then that as well) as well thats why the Empire built lancers to try and stop TRD by killing of the starfighters.
