Re: EaW Multiplayer w/ out GameSpy?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to bypass Gamespy for online play. I'm wondering if anyone has used Hamachi http://www.hamachi.cc/ or similiar product to do so and if it improved your game performance in online play? If so I have a few friends that would jump on that programs band wagon right away.

Kali (www.kali.net) is something you can use for most games to simulate a lan connection, but as of right now, Kali does not support EAW yet.

I also understood that X-Fire was supposed to be adding support for EAW, not sure what is happening with this yet.

I have to say my friends, I have not used KALI since the days of DUKE NUKEM! Never needed to as games got better equiped for online play. But I would love a way to get around GAMESPY. I have heard mixed results on Hamachi. I need to make some time and get some folks to test it out with me  I guess.

How would XFIRE work? Would it go AROUND gamespy? Or would it just get folks together to meet up on GAMESPY?

That is my question as well.  I didn't ever think of X-Fire as a matchup software myself, and maybe the thing I heard was about support for EAW stats on X-fire... who knows, but I do know that Kali does that kind of thing.

Yeah xfire does not support its own online thing, it just allows you to connect with servers and such right from xfire. And the whole in game chat thing. That is what xfire means when they say they "support" a game, that the ingame chat and direct server connect work.

This is interesting, does X-Fire support direct connect if you specify someone's IP as the server address?  Or does it just support hooking you up with the in-game gamespy server?

Pretty sure its just a big chat room with a hookup to gamespy.

You know the big start button on the left hand side of your comp screen? go to all and check out EaW, in its options it says "open MP with Xfire" i clicked it but right as i did that had to exit and leave, (darn mom) but you guys should check it out and see if you like it better.

Baron Fels avatar scares me, i left that movie when it got to the part with them in the house...

Person B: Wheres the Emperor, anyway?

Person A: The Emperor is currently at Nal Hutta.

Person B: I don't think he'd be at Nal Hutta it has a swamp.

Person A: Whats wrong with a swamp?

Person B: Well its the Emperor, he would never touch a swamp as hes well the Emperor.

Person A: Your right...

Person B: Instead he'd make a super weapon to destroy the swamp, it'd probably be called the Plunginator!!!!

Person A: Huh?

Person B: Lol....

Hamachi actually works quite well, the problem is two fold:

1. You must know ahead of time who you're going to play with and join their network.

1a. There is a limited network size, so we can't just start a PFF network.

2. When emulated, it resembles a network in every form. Therefore, shared folders (and the viruses that go with them) are available to all in the network.

Should you be on a network with those you know and/or have your shares and virus protection setup correctly, it's great. For example, I use it with a group of friends from a LAN party quite offenly to game and since I already know them (and we obviously all know how to deal with our shares and such, since we've been lanning for real obviously) it works out great.
