Asteroid Belt Strategy

What are the best strategies when you are attacking a system with an asteroid belt and a bottleneck opening?

 

I got my rear end handed to me yesterday when my 4 star destroyers tried to go through the bottleneck opening and 3 of the ships collided with asteroids, or at least it looked like they were colliding with them. The AI only had a mon cal, 2 assault frigates and the fighters from a level 2 space station.

Ironically Petroglyph, when asked if you tried to move a bunch of units close to asteroids, said that they would not naturally go into asteroids unless ordered there and those ships on the edge would not get "pushed" into the asteroids.  Now that we've played the game we know that that is not true.  If you order ships through a choke-point they will go straight through asteroids causing much damage and frustration.

That's why the odds to successfully navigating the Millenium Falcon through the Hoth Asteroid Belt was 3,720 to 1. ;D

i have no problem with my bigger ships avoiding the fields.

Yea I played Geonissis 8 times today as rebels and I never had a single Mon cal go thru an astoriod field... and I had 5 mon cals almost the whole time (playing FLEET Skirmish) and I was navigationg thru the middle section which is alot of astoriods

I was playing in skirmish on Geonosis as the Empire.  I had 3 Interdictor cruisers and clicked across the asteroids (yes away from the asteroids) and 1 went through the choke point and the other 2 barged into the asteroids and got blown up.

Why 3 Interdictor anyway, you would have lost.

Reread my post and you'll figure it out.

I was playing in skirmish...

I had 3 interdictors because I was messing around toward the end of the skirmish (I was the tech upgrade and economy guy).
