I refuse to pay to beta test the game.  The developers seriously made a mistake releasing the game in its current state.  I'm not talking about single player as I only bought this game to play against friends (who have also returned it!!).  We have so far successfully had 2 games online.  The rest either crash out, wont connect successfully, give an exception error or will just sit in the multiplayer lobby doing nothing!!

By releasing it early in this state, the magazines have slated the game giving it a bad name already so the damage has already been done.  I'm sure they will iron out the patches in the next few months, but by then most players will have given up and moved on - plus sales have been lost by people not buying it based on the reviews.

Let this be a lesson to petroglyph at future releases - DONT USE GAMESPY!!!!  LET PEOPLE CONNECT DIRECTLY VIA IP.

In a couple of months the game will be in the bargain bins in stores so I will come back and buy it then as thats the price it should be - £9.99.

I will buy it sooner if they:

1. Allow us to connect via direct IP, bypassing the POS gamespy system

2. Allow us to turn off pirates in multiplayer campaign mode - currently the battles are autoresolved and you never even get a chance to choose if you fight the battle or not, hence you end up losing all your units!!  It doesnt even tell you what units you faced or what units you lost AFTER the battle either!!  How can you send a second fleet to the planet to counter-attack if you dont know what units are there?!!

3. Turn on persistent damage to stop people from steam rolling over all the planets.  I know you can do it as I have done it already in the ONE time I managed to get the campaign game to work.

Its Not Petro's fault if Gamespy is poor.  Lucasarts probably chose gamespy as they offered the best deal for them.  Petroglyph at the moment are fixing Gamespys problems.  They have the best community support many experienced gamers have ever seen.  you never know....This time next week IP-IP may be enabled!!

IP to IP should have been already in the last 2 patches as an option, not everyone is willing to play on GameSpy POS system.

bloody developers always limiting the options.

How do you explain many other games like EAW are working fine with gamespy?

Even the release day ...

They wont let you connect ip to ip because they cant check your cdkey , forget it .

So what you suggest then? people will continue to complain until it's fixed.

There are alot of otherways to deal with the cdkey issue.

Don't be so negetive towards people who are having trouble with stupid gamespy.

And i believe Gamespy has nothing to do with checking the cdkey.  It's just a gaming platform.....

He said he bought it.  and btw, just because someone has a pirated copy doesn't make a single performance difference in online gameplay.

Everyone needs to stop thinking that if someone else thinks differently is pirating the game, it's lame and pathetic childish attitued!!!

OK people let's all calm down and stop the flaming and get along.  Yes the game has some issues with online connectivity.  Personally I think just getting an RTS game for its MP capabilities is short-sighted.  The galactic conquest mode is kind of fun.  Plus playing campaigns against AI may help you to develop tactics to use online (when it gets to a decent working state).

Sensationalist Veiw points never help anything. To be honest looking on here and on the LucasArts forums there does seem to be alot of with the game, specially with multiplayer, Petroglyph are trying to address these issues. I dont know whether Petroglyph were allowed to decide which multiplayer matching system they used, but third party ones, like All Seeing Eye may be an option with those having problems (i dont know if ASE supports it yet).

All games start out with bugs, mainly because on release the sheer number of people using the product, find bugs that werent picked up during Q&A and beta's. i think its alittle pre-emptive to take the game back straight away. but if your not happy and the return policy is limited by time then fair enough, best thing i can suggest is to wait, monitor the forums if the game improves, buy it later on and patch it.

I dont see how you can compare this to Starship Troopers, the game was poor anyway (i could tell that just from the Demo)  Empire at War although not directly comparable is a better game in my opinion, and its a relatively new studio. Prehaps you should read reviews before buying.

This thread is getting out of hand, the original author has made some very good statements, and if you'll notice he has talked about his multiplayer experience over gamespy,  meaning he did not pirate the game. So everyone making that accusation was dead wrong.

Dont get me wrong.  When the game works in multiplayer it is great fun.  But getting it to work has frustrated me so much that I've given up.  I have my firewall turned off and it works sometimes, but 80% of the time it just hangs when trying to connect.

Was looking forward to the multiplayer campaign and playing my mate over the course of a few days with the ability to save.  BUT they didnt include any huge campaign maps PLUS the pirates in the game are stupidly designed.  Wouldnt mind if you could turn them off, but the options for setting up a game are very sparse.

Main grip with multiplayer campaign is that you can scout out a planet and find its owned by a few pirate ships.  You send a fleet to take it over, the game auto-resolves the battle and I've lost capital ships, etc against tiny corvettes!!  If the option to disable pirates in multiplayer was present I'd love it...... Once I managed to connect to a game that is.

I even came up with an idea of getting my friend to VPN onto a machine which is on my LAN (so he would appear to be on the same network) and using the LAN option instead of having to go through game spy.  But he didnt appear in the game lobby so im assuming its disabled somehow :(

When the game works its fun - but most of the time is spent having problems

i agree i have not seen any bugs.. and ive played  plenty of succesful multiplayer games.. .. id say about 50% work

which is ok

Considering .. this game is relatively bugless... .... *cough* Battlefield 2*cough*

The only issue that I got is with the crappy Gamespy and the game is too good to just give up on it and wait till it drops price. But its your decision yes but i'm saying that just one element is effecting your judgement. I see 340 people online last time I checked and theres probably 500 or more by now. Well Gamespy may have issuse such as I can't host games anymore but these problems are being fixed by Petroglyph who saved us from patch 1.2 with out disconnecting problems for most people. Now they are trying to fix the stability of the game which won't let us host and/or trying to host or join.

I'm not telling you to keep the game since its your decision but Petroglyph is fixing as many problems as they can. And the ingame lobby I see people spamming and saying how bad the game is then point to BFME 2, so annoying.

Game crashing often comes because of old drivers or setting your game standards to high. I play with 2 computers + router + firewall online. I have no problemo's.

Its all about configuring your comp right. Maybe reading the manuals for a change before wanting to pwn peeps on the internet can give you ideas howto configure your comp right.

Let it be a lesson to you to read the manual first.

*Petro will fix these issues so peeps like you wont have to think why they have online problems. Just w8 and see.....
