Ghostly_Substance Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 (edited) http://www.glop.org/starforce/There is a program called Starforce and it screws up your computer. If you have any of these games then you must be concerned. PLEASE READ THE LINK INCASE YOU HAVE ANY GAMES LISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE ;D Since I have Silent Hunter 3 I must go anti-Starforce hunting and if any of you have Codename Panzer or X-3 Reunion check out that link. You have been warned and if you dont get rid of starforce you will have the problems they listed. The Saint Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Oh f--king hell..I've got like 6 games on that list..4 of them I still play regularly.
Necro Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 generally only ubisoft uses starforce, so anything recent by them (pop's, splinter cell's etc.) theres a removal program so whenever i wanna play one of the games i let it install - then use the removal tool after im done. thank god most games dont use it.
Ghostly_Substance Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 Maybe this was why I was lagging online and if it wasn't then I got my modem to blame. :-\ Bloody thing. Well I got rid of it now lets hope it doesn't go onto the ex-pack or SH4 ;D If so imagine the sales dropping. -One Empire falls another riseshttp://myanimelist.net/signature/EuroSubstance.png http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/os/type/2/ghostlysubstance.png
The Saint Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I just thought of something, if Starforce crashes my drive, this will be a great way to sue the fuck out of Ubisoft. I wont even ask for money..maybe games..and well maybe enough money to pay the legal fees but the major thing I'll sue them on is so that they stop using Starforce.
Ghostly_Substance Posted February 4, 2006 Author Posted February 4, 2006 I like Ubisoft since they make great games. Brothers in Arms and Silent Hunter series. King Kong but never played it. Sue them and you'll make yourself look like a fool but sue them with support and you'll get rid of starforce faster then a petition Of course or I might be looking at this the wrong way. Anywho theres alway a boycott until the devs get needy and change it. ;D -One Empire falls another riseshttp://myanimelist.net/signature/EuroSubstance.png http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/os/type/2/ghostlysubstance.png
The Saint Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I was thinking Class-Action Law Suit really...
Garbageben Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I can testify to personally having had a StarForce issue. After I installed CodeName: Panzers 1 & 2, I played them a little bit. Then I got the update patch for #2. The installation went well and it asked me to reboot my PC. I clicked yes. My computer proceeded then to start to boot, but never got past the very first boot cycle (where it shows you your devices). I tried everything I could think of to restart and it still would not boot. The only reason I am still using my PC today is that my dad found something about it screwing up USB devices, so when I unplugged them all then my PC booted. Needless to say I am not going to play another SF game again (learned my lesson). However for a couple of hours I thought my PC was going to be a vegetable for the duration of its existence. http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/sh/type/0/garbageben.png
Lucius Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 thank god i only have 3 games, heh, bf2, battlefront 2 (bf2) and eaw demo whoot! would battlefront be called battlefield if the name wasnt already taken?
akulapanam Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 People might consider emailing Microsoft through one of these blogs, hopefully they might make a similar response as they did to the rootkit issue:http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/http://blogs.technet.com/antimalware/
Garbageben Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Well the thing is that StarForce doesn't actually kill your PC (just slows it down some and installs some drivers). The people who wrote the protection system even say they'll pay you $5000 if you can prove that StarForce actually messes up PCs (you have to do it on a PC they provide I believe). Since either unplugging USB devices or other things allows the computer to boot they can claim that it hasn't ruined your PC. It is a major hassle though and therefore I have decided to not purchase any games with StarForce protection unless the game in question is one I very much desire (like an EaW or something). http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/sh/type/0/garbageben.png
Garbageben Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND YOU PROBABLY WON'T BELIEVE IT!!! Ok so I have Galactic Civs 2 and while browsing their site I found this topic. http://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=161&AID=106741Apparently in response to GC2 not having copyright protection, the people at StarForce have posted links to a torrent download for the game!!! This steps beyond all lines of decency at the very least. To say that a company promotes piracy and then links a download of that game in their official forums (starforce that is) is totally wrong. I say StarForce should be sued at least and then shut down. http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/sh/type/0/garbageben.png
