Re: Engines destroyed, movement still?

I have noticed that after destroying the engines on both crusiers, they continue to move. I have not checked if it is at the same speed as before engine destruction. But i find it very odd when you destroy here engines they can still move.... ???

they move slower, what it is is their momentum(no friction in space to stop them) and they use manueverying just to turn.

actually it should

in space there no friction or gravity

there is forward momentum (movement)

what happens the engines explode & that explosion pushes the ship foward

without friction gravity or retro the ship will keep moving

yup, i saw that on day 2. and its cool that after loosing the shields, you can move closer to the stasion to hide in its shields.

Same with when the ion cannon hits you, your ship can move SLOWLY but surely. (while its innards are slowly ripped apart from the constant Y-wing barrage....)  :'( :'( )

It's called inertia. Haven't taken physics yet? ::)

"An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by a equal or opposite force."

Since there's no friction in space, things will keep going until something slows them down.

Lol, wow my school must be way ahead of you. I know about that and gravity etc, but i didn't know it would be put into the game. We lerned about inertia in Biology which is before Physics.  :D;)

Conversely, only an application of force can cause an object to change velocity (direction and speed). Thus, if the device supplying force (the engines) is destroyed, how is it that the ship can still change direction and speed?

Jmaster: You may have learned about it in Biology, but it is a theory of Physics.

Raydude: Manuevering Jets. Even todays space craft use these to make course corrections, rotation, full turns, and braking.

I took physics 2 years ago. ;)

The reason it still turns is maneuvering engines. They work just like bow thrusters on a boat basically, so the ship can still turn left and right, and even slow down if they needed to. And to create an accurate space game, the laws of physics must be applied, otherwise it'll look like 4 year olds  designed it.

(Sorry for the wording, but I was actually asking you if you haven't taken physics yet. See the question mark? ;D)

just seems they turn...too fast i mean think of the vastness of space, the reason the ships move fast is cause of the huge engines...with them down it should turn so slowly that it's bearly visible...kinda like clouds!

Ok I used my 3 Venators to destroy the pirate's Venators and got the engines destroyed. I agree it moved slower but when it go to the astroids (with still a small mass)  it turned on a dime which it needed a bit more space to turn on. This aint a space sim I agree but if its going to turn there must be another hardpoint  ???

One more thing that ships with hardpoints need 10% more life since destroying only hardpoints and getting it blown up is weird  ;D IMO

Cool thats nice but if you read my post I took in in Biology this year. So i already know it and will when i reach psyhics. I don't need an explanation by the way of why you already said before. I know what it means etc, i just made this for some people who didnt' know, and because i didnt think the game would do this. (this realistic)

Christ on a stick i have known of inertia gravity and the allmighty FORTH DIMENSION!!!!!! since 7th grade...

but the whole no more engines yet i can turn thing would make more sense if the ships turned a lot slower

It would make the game less enjoyable and a lot less scientific if they suddenly stop with no gravity of friction to hold them back!!! I still don't understand how they would slow down...

Oh, and on the case of gravity, shouldn't fighters be pulled towards asteroid fields?

If you have a clone and a droid, who will win?

The clone, of course!

asterioids are soo small gravity from them is negligable..

2- IF they are in orbit they should be traveling at 1000's of MPH.. or. gallactic units per hour? just to stay in orbit..an engine failure would just keep it in the same orbit in same direction..but if it even slowed down a bit..it would fall to a planet.. :/

all this aside

It should be starwars ish.. engines down = no speed/ acceleration

all u can do is turn 360 degrees..

Engines would only move you forward. The only way a ship could ever turn is by other systems, such as jets or, in the case of these sorts of technologies, something along the lines of manipulating an anti-gravity field.

But just destroying the main engines woudl do nothing, apart from disabling its capability to move in a striaght line so fast as it had done. :)
