Hey there, i'm new and this is my first post so hello everyone.

After playing the game and falling in love with the space battles i've decided it's time i stop putting it and upgraded my graphics card. I was just wondering for all the techinically minded out there if this set up would be enough to play the game full settings.

I currently have

AMD AthlonXP 2100+

512MB DDR333 PC2700 RAM

Sapphire Radeon 9000 128MB Edition.

Now obviously the graphics card is a bit dated and thats what i intend to upgrade. The card i was looking at is the GeForce 6 6600GT 128MB http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=81344

The reviews are good and i've heard from my brother it's a good card. It's slap bang on my budget of £100 and i can't really go any higher.

So what do you think, i know it's hard to say as the games not out, but i imagine theres people out there with more knowledge on the subject than me, so if your could give us your opinions, it would be much appriciated, only other thing i'll say about the system is that the memory could be quite limiting, but i'm not sure.

Thanks for any help!

P.S If i have this in the wrong section my apoligies and move it accordingly

I have...

P4 2.66Ghz

1024 PC2700

Geforce 6600 GT (OC'd ~10%)

And even then I keep the graphics at about medium.  The thing is there is SOOO much going on at once I have a feeling that processor power is what is holding me back the most.  [Not to mention the Dell mobo I am still using. :(]

The new gfx card will help a lot but dont expect to run it at full throttle.  Upping your Ram to 1024 would also help a lot and it would be the cheapest and easiest upgrade.

What is with people and updating there graphics card for ONE game. Is it worth paying $400-900 dollars for a new graphics card? Thats a lot, plus you need to know how to install it or hie someone and thats money as well.

Well, if you are spending $400-$900 for a graphics card, then there is indeed something wrong with you. ;-). I spent $250 to upgrade my 9800 Pro to the X850 Pro and I can see dramatic improvment on quiet a few newer games so it's well worth it.

Mate. I never said anywhere i was paying $400-900 dollars, i brought my graphics card in the end for £100 which is ~$200. I said in the post that i didn't buy the graphics card just for the game, but more like the game finally made me buy a new graphics card as I've been thinking about it for awhile. Also i built my computer so I'm sure i can install the graphics card. This is besides the point.

I just want to know if theres anyone about who could tell me if i should be able to run the game with all the settings up most with a resolution of say 1280 X 1024. If anyone knows this please let me know! Many thanks.

Firstly does your Motherboard support AGP 8x, as i couldnt find out if the All in Wonder Radeon 9000 was AGP 8x.

Secondly there is also an ati card available for the same budget (a Sapphire X700 Pro 128mb - AGP) but im unsure how that compares to the 6600 GT from Nvidia. no i tell a lie it would seem that the Nvidia has the edge over it so id plumb for that one,

Thirdly you may see a boost in performance from adding another stick of 512mb RAM, if you get this graphics card, you may find that it might look gorgeous but there isnt enough power to process the graphics and consequently you'll get slowed down. its something to consider.

at the end of the day it comes down to not being able to upgade anymore and having to get a whole new system, if financial viable. i tend to try and buy parts that have future proofing, and salvage bits from the previous system, in order to keep costs down.

for $800 I was able to build my own machine. It came out great. Got everything from newegg.com. they couldn't be beat.

Athlon 3500+ overclocked from 2.2ghz to 2.4 ghz ($201, free shipping)

AOpen Geforce 6600GT PCI 16x ( I play Battlefield 2 on high with this card and for $140 it's the best you can get at the lowest price)

Case with 3 fans and 480watt powersupply was only $45 and hasn't failed in the 3 months I've had it)

Abit KN8-ultra motherboard was only $90 at the time but has gone up.

Keyboard and mouse was $15

17" Monitor (My father works the New York sanitation Dept. and people are always throwing out old monitors so I go one for free)

160 GB hard drive (it's enough since I'm the only one using this comp)

Windows XP Pro was free from School (go devry!)

I also got my favorite Headset for the comp, I don't use speakers, I like the surround sound of a headset.

With this I can play Battlefield 2 on high setting(except the lighting and texture which they set to medium, there's a ton of frame rate loss if you put those on high and it doesn't really change anything) on 800X600 I don't go higher by choice not performance. I expect nothing less than high from EAW too; I have the demo on high, infact.

yes, I did build the system for EAW but I got Battlefield 2 and Special Force for christmas and love it. besides, the old comp (my mother and sister still use it) was 5 years old.

Well If your buying a graphics card for those prices I would worry where you shop, as someone is seriously ripping you off. Installing a graphics card is a piece of cake, as long as you take the time to learn.

Been planning to get myself one of those 6600GTs.  Only time will tell though.

But like what others have said, more ram is probably your best port of call and has a relatively cheap cost.  You don't appreciate how much an extra 512mb does until you have it.

Cheers for the replies,

As for RAM yes, i'm intending to upgrade it within the month, just got to let the money come in and i'll probably get another GB stick. The graphics card arrived today so i'll fit it when i get back from universty and will let you know how it fairs on some games.

Ok well i've got the demo running at full specs now with my new card without any problems what so ever, it looks bloody gorgous. Coming from lowest possible specs to the highest certainly makes you appriciate it more. Just have to questions for anyone who knows.

1. Where do i find the option to change Anti-aliasing? i can't see it anywhere.

2. It sets my graphics really low by default, is this a demo glitch or is there something more to this?

Its right on the first menu, cant miss it. Go to options, then video, and anti-aliasing is right below the res list.

One thing, how can it look "bloody gorgeous" if you havent changed the AA yet?  ;D

Yeh i made a bit of an embarassing mistake here. I've had the AA up on full all the time, it was in Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War in which i couldn't find the AA  :o

i can run everything at max 1200x1600 with 2 aa on my ati x1600 512mb card... i think system ram also plays a small part in this too cause in graphic intensive games the more ram u have the more u can turn the video up

.. indeed.i can run 1400x1050 in space battles..high 2x Aa but ground kills it for me

so i can just take off AA or lower the rez a bit.. maybe something in th 1200x1000's.. not sure exact rez
