.tga not very user friendly. Isn't it?

As I noticed screenshots in the demo are done in the .tga format. To state out I hate this. Why? Very simple: TGA is a  you cannot open with most free tools like GIMP. Not even Windows itself can open it. Why not using BMP or another standard format? The only "free" program I know that can open TGA is Irfanview. So my question is: Why TGA? Is there anything special about TGA I am not aware of?

I'm not certain (and can't test it right now), but I think Quicktime's PictureViewer also supports .tga's.

 

I don't encounter that format very much, though. It's generally intended for higher-end graphical content. It may have been picked because those files are easy to write, and support high color depths, compression, and transparency.
