Someone should host this thing broken into 50MB pieces for the 56k'ers.

No, someone should teach the 56kers how to use a download manager like FDM ;).

Or better yet, people could invest in a broadband connection of some sort.

Yeh. 750mb for a demo is pretty big, even for a game of this size... Might mean the demo is gonna be bigger, content wise, than we may suspect. Or not. I'm probably gonna start the download then have to wait for the next day to play. I do have DSL, but with the popularity of the game, I doubt i'll get a good enough connection to finish before I go to sleep.

A download manager won't help that much. You get a max of 7 kilobytes per a second on dialup (56 kilobits divided by 8), meaning that with 375 mb of data (compressed 750, though I doubt it will be that well compressed) it will take a min of 15 hours to download. Reality then kicks in and rarely does the connection get above 6kb/s, plus 750mb is 750mb already compressed, so compressing it further won't help much.

A better option is to find a gullible friend with broadband. I definity had a friend who I was friends with pretty much because he had broadband, since I had dialup for most of high school (actually, closer to I more or less continued to be his friend because of his connection. Guy was a total jerk).

Another good option is to go out to best buy/compusa/wherever and buy yourself a wireless network card for $10 (when they have sales, unfortuantly that's usually 10 after mail-in rebates) and get yourself a free wireless connection. I don't see much of a problem with that if you only use the network for downloading large files (assuming all of your actions on the network are legal, no downloading movies or anything like that), since they aren't paying by bandwidth used. But I'll leave the morality of that up to you.

For us broadband users, I expect a torrent up on Wed. Though if LucasArts hosts the demo, they might have enough bandwidth for all of us (I was able to get 700kb/s from the AoE III offical site the day the AoE III demo was released).

Zing!

Heh, the idea behind the smaller file sizes is to prevent having to start over in the case of an interruption. Although a download manager would help, they need to make sure it only has 1 active connection as a dialup connection would waist too much packet size otherwise.

Speaking from past experience, Lucasarts always releases files through the LucasFiles network. In the past this site has been less than reliable, to the point of running out of bandwidth. If LA goes through their usual site, I wouldn't expect a widely available version of the demo until sometime Thursday EST.

Im gonna be using Game Spot to download the demo, I just got Game Spot Complete so it should go pretty fast.

As far as Lucas Files is concerned, im not too sure how that will work. DMUK has said something about Bit Torrent but im not sure if that's what they will be using or not. Im guessing they will have it available on the website as well.

Why doesn't someone upload the demo to a Bittorrent tracker? In this case, the result would be that more people downloading would actually equal faster results.

Rather than drain servers individually, sharing this file amongst ourselves would probably be far more efficient.

This is probably one of the few, but incredibly useful, legal uses of the Bittorrent network.

Download managers sometimes make files unable to be sued, for some reason or another.

Also, some of us live in places where only a dial connection is practical, regardless of what could be afforded. My own situation is that of a boat moored in a marina and you won't find any engineeers prepared to come down and install cable in a place like this. :)
