Hugh,

It seems that I have misread one of the questions from the mod team. The sixth question in question 6 ("Is it possible to replace characters and units with new ones?") should read: "Is it possible to add characters and units?

Hope to hear from you soon!

It should be possible to add characters. I'm not sure how difficult it is.

I still haven't exhumed my archives - I have some notes and such on an old (possibly dead) machine that I'll need to refer to.

Cool Scathe! This sounds potentially quite exciting...

Anyways, I went back to my lead, Jason; and have tried again:

Hi Jason!

Just a look in to see if we got anywhere when you very kindly said you would

pass my feedback on to the game's developer.

I do appreciate it's an odd request to make, given Lucas Arts are a huge

commercial outfit, and obviously would normally be amazed at such a request

for source codes for one of it's titles; but on this occasion I would humbly

ask that the game's age, unsupported status, and my; and my fellow die-hards

at swrebellion.com, completely innocent reasons for asking Lucasarts for it.

There's absolutely no commercial insentive, our sole reason is to unlock the

final pieces of magic from the game we love, and then perhaps eventually put

it to bed, having seriously got all the enjoyment we possibly could out of

one of your titles. I'm one of those nerds who doesn't sleep properly unless

I go to bed with that sound of a Star Destroyer resonating in my head!

Thanks again for your continued correspondance.

Hello,

The best I can do for you is to pass your feedback on to the developer of

the game. Thanks for the feedback.

Jason / LucasArts

P.S. When replying, remember to include all previous messages (no

attachments please!). Also, please do not change the subject heading as

this contains routing

information. Changing the subject heading can delay any responses to

you.

Dear Jason,

Thanks for replying dude!

Just a quick question, are you guys planning any further development with

the Rebellion game? Using a tool could Resource Hacker i've been able to see

loads of stuff dormant in the game engine that didn't seem to make it to the

final product. It's just a shame you guys just sort of left the game dead

and unsupported, it could have been such a great titile.

Just food for thought, but if I as the public can't have access to the

game's source code, what's it doing other than rot into cyber oblivion!

Seems a shame really, given some of us out here could do so much with it,

and really love the game!

No bad vibe intended in anything i've said!!!

Hello,

Thank you for your message.

I am sorry but this isn't available to the public, Jahled. Sorry about that.

Jason / LucasArts

Fingers crossed, Mask has said the source code is serious shit, and if we had it could unlock no end of possibilities, especially with all the ideas we've all been throwing around the forums here for the past couple of years. I am determined to really give this one a good shot, we've got absolutely nothing to loose! If lucas arts can come round to seeing we have absolutely no commercial interests, and are simply in this to expand the fun of the game; right guys?

By the way, this thread isn't mine or Scathane's sole preserve! Get involved! If you don't fully grasp what I at least have been requesting from Lucas Arts, drop Mask a line. I'm sure he'll reply if he's not to busy, or post something public if he get's buried with emails.

But communicate with Lucas Arts with RESPECT! Don't get frustrated when you are ignored, and get silly. Scathane and me have been fortunate to have had (reasonably) lucky brakes. Don't expect one instantly. If we POLITELY persist, we might get somewhere! It's on all our interests to get whatever positive feedback we can from the guys at Lucas Arts; remember when you communicate with them you are in a way doing so, on this thread, on behalf of us all. Don't get cocky!

Oh, and spell check...like I forgot to!

Ok, well in the time it took me to compose all of that, my emial recieved this:

Hello,

Unfortunately there are no plans to release the source code for this game. I wish I had better news for you, Jahled.

Jason / LucasArts

Wierd timing eh?

Chins up! Any ideas?

Ok, well not one to take a quite frankly polite and cool 'no,' for an answer; I responded thus:

Hello,

Please feel free to sabre me down dead if you whiry of my persistence! I

shall obviously respect the fact you are a busy dude and I a mere padadork

who spends to much time roaming around in game files, trying to enhance

things!

Are you able to direct me to someone at Lucas Arts who I may respectfully

approach for further technical queries concerning Rebellion, or the

corporate reasons for withholding the source-code?

My thanks for your continued communication, it is refreshing to know that

Lucas Arts is not as mechanical and soulless as some outfits out there!

-Jahled

(The manor in which Jason is responding is actually quite cool when you think about it, in that he's taking the time to address me...in human terms!)

Notice how I skillfully lied about knowing advanced gibberish like tweeking with game files etc... Mask/Gank/dudes who know more about ZX Spectrums than I do... in the unlikely event this gets anywhere, you moder's are going to have to dive in pretty damn fast...

Cool to hear Mask, but haven't you guys taken my and Scathe's efforts as a cue to attempt to contact Lucas Arts yourselves? I, as a complete computing-fool, have had the absolutely one-inch-of-the-ground-blip of success in being replied to by an employee of Lucas Arts who has now dried up. Couldn't/should't you guys join the crusade? As far as employees goes, I can't imagine the office space recieving our communication is that big! Enough thoughtfully worded communications from us requesting info on Rebellion is going to start them muttering to them selves about the sudden flux. I guess they must all drink at the same bar. This isn't Microsoft!

They can agree on stuff like:

-the game is six years old

-completely unsupported, or similar to any other title

-rotting away in cyber oblivion

-perhaps it might be interesting to see what they can achieve unfinanced if we we give them access to the Source Code.

Scathane has supplied his contact's email details, why not some of you moders contact him?

I'm prepared to continue my efforts, but I think 'Jason,' has dried up. So I need ideas as to new avenues of approach.

As I said, we have nothing to loose here chaps; get involved!

Well SOCL, this is my latest blast, much of the same thing with a new vein at the end I hope now somebody picks up on.

What this precious Source-Code can do for us is basically outlined in an email Mask sent me when I asked him for questions to put at Lucas Arts. They are the questions in the message I sent, I have copied below:

Sir/Madam,

As a devoted player and modder of Lucas Art's excellent game, Star Wars Rebellion, there are a number of questions I would be grateful if you could answer a couple of questions.

I need to know:

-the complete structure of the savegames

-if there can be more than 256 colours used everywhere in the game

(pics/movies/textures)

-if there could be new cinematics added and if they could be related

to new events and to existing events (like a movie for the final battle

event for example).

-could we use another resolution for the game (640*480) and the movies ?

-Also how to create new events with the old-fashioned pics.

-what defines a major character ? For example, they cannot die.

-if we can add new characters and units to the existing.

-if we can give the HQs on Coruscant and Yavin new positions. Could we

give the HQ-ability to another planet, so that the NR would start at

Coruscant and the Empire at a renamed system, Wayland ?

Of course the game's source code would nip all of this in the bud.

Whilst I obviously respect the commercial interests of Lucas Arts, your status as one of the major game developers in the gamming industry, there are a few factors I would like to respectfully state for my brazen and very bold request for your product's info.

The game is by all intensive purposes, commercially dead! Lucas Arts have not supported the title since you released it six or so years ago. Call me an old hippy, but given you guys have obviously completely abandoned your original product, it seems a shame to simply let it rot in cyber-oblivion. I am aware of a loads of stuff in the game files that didn't seem to make it to the final-released product; WAV files, DLL entries, even reference to the Millennium Falcon appearing in the tactical battle! Given I and my friends have been able to import new ship models, cards, and the odd program, and similar stuff; it would be a nonsense to not let us try and unleash the rest of what could have been with your title! There's obviously no commercial incentive; I and my friends simply want to enhance the enjoyment of one of your more under-rated titles for ourselves and our fellow gamers, given we seemed doomed to love it so much!

The game engine seems to be completely unrelated to any other Lucas Arts title. Anything we would unearth programming wise wouldn't endanger any existing product or future product! Anyhows, we are you guys friends! We have fallen in love with one of your older games and simply want to breath some fresh life into it, given we are beginning to hit walls as far as enhancing playing possibilities go. We've got a whole community based about the game living and breathing with ideas and creativity. Please let us have a go!

Finally, if it's a financial question after six years, please let me know at what score!

I would also respectfully ask for a contact at Lucas Arts who I can ask for why my repeated requests for this information has been turned down; I am quite innocently curious as to why a six year old unsupported game is being held in your safe without any possibility of future development or support! Makes no sense! Surely it's a waste of all the money spent on the game's developers? Just to let it sit there doing nothing!

Sincerely and respectfully,

Jahled

My email layout was slightly more presentable than what materialized 'pasted!' You get the drift SOCL?

Um...I'll try.

Now, as far as a direct line of communication with LucasArts goes....

Okay, LucasArts has stock which people can invest in. Well, aren't stockholders of a company technically allowed higher privelleges than any normal person on the street? I mean, wouldn't they have some sort of "higher" communication than, lets say, us? I know it probably wouldn't be by much, but it would probably get us some sort of more personal communication with them than just automated responses. Furthermore, it would show them that we not only care for ourselves and getting the game source code for our own delight, but the fact that we actually have invested in the company itself and actually care about LucasArts and not what we can get out of it for ourselves. Then again, with the amount of SW fans around, being a stockholder of LucasArts would probably mean nothing....

Cool Scathe! Work on that dude in your own sublime pace!

Reminded of that today, I sent this:

Jason,

Assuming you did pass on my message, did the 'game's developer,' respond in

any fashion other than silence?

As stated previously, all i'm asking your help to achieve is to expand my

personnal amuzement for the game, given you guys seemed to have left absent

from the original game.

With better tactical battle ship-models, i'm now in the final process of

expanding the fighter options for both sides from four to seven. A snag! I

badly need the game's original source code in order to accomplish this!

Help!

The game is what, now about six years old; you dudes have done nothing with

any expansion, please let me have the joy of injecting some serious new

lease of life in my favourite game! I just need your help with the source

code!

Or are you guys holding back because you've already got something in the

pipe-line?

In good faith,

-Jahled

Ok; before some of you dudes get creative with my inbox, I do not pretend to be an expert or submiter of the cool stuff like new ship models or fighters, respect to the dudes producing such stuff!

My soul desire is to have the oppitunity to have game-play with stuff like I said; which would require the bloody source code.

Can you grasp how cool the game would be?

Call me a lost course, but keep going we must....

While the enthusiasm for the product isn't lost in the message, it just seems like its mixing sucking up to the guy with some antagonism thrown in for who he had worked for at the time.

I'd keep the message's constructive points to address frustrations of the game, but I'd lose elements that probe the guy about "what he's up to", or any other things about why he couldn't respond fast enough for ya.

Just my opinion, but I think there's something to be said for keeping things short, sweet, and to the point.

Well, you see, the point is that I do have a reason for a) emailing Sider with emails such as I did, and b) posting those here. Let me explain...

a)

I emailed Hugh and he said he wanted to look into it; I believe him... On the other hand he clearly stated that it might take some time, and I believe that as well. Now, I know from experience that if I don't keep some flow of contact between me and someone who's got something you want, s/he's going to forget about you and you'll never get it... Admittedly, you do run out of things to say, hence my email. If you have a suggestion on how to envoy better content to Hugh Sider in such emails, I would be happy to hear about them.

b)

If I don't post such messages here, the same will happen to you guys. If you hear or see nothing new or updated in this thread, you'll start to think along the lines of "Oh well, just another nice idea that's going to get us nowhere"... I understand that the last email exchange betwenn me and Sider's not what you hoped for but it is at least something.

By the way, I personally don't see the antagonism for who he had worked for at the time... :?

Sorry Scath, my bad, I was referring a little more towards what Jahlad wrote in his last post. And your right, you do want to space out those messages a little. You want to reach that balance of frequency of the messages with allowing the fellow time to look into things.

I don't know what frequency your going with atm, but I suspect 2-3 a month isn't too bad. Its enough for the guy to have us in the back of his mind yet it isn't like we're hounding him to death or anything making him wanna thing twice about interacting heh :)

1) Well, fighters are not that hard, you just need to create the pictures with the different unit colors on a black background with the correct size.

2) And go on we will
