Click on this link to get a good description of what an attempted capture of an Imperial ship would be like. Skip to the actual engagement and substitute Rebels for Federation. The important piece of this article to pay attention to is how the Imperials react to the boarding and capture attempt.

It would be likely that destroying your ship would be a quick death versus vader, plus killing yourself won't make Vader want to go after your family.

thats not what it would be like the Empire run on greed. the captian's would sell there own Grandmother for a Credit and sum favour.

 

A few Imperial high commanders did take advantage of the dissaray that the Emperor's death caused to sieze control of areas and basically become warlords (all of this is in EU). But, the normal ISD captain is a soldier, not a beaurocrat. The situation described in that article will be what you will run into in 1999 of the 2000 ISDs you would come across.
