Please note that this is speculation*

O.K. So from what I've seen the shields on planets cover only your base. This is not to mention that the shield generator is also outside of the shield area, making it easy to destroy (if not protected properly). Chances are that those are the only shields you can build.

I don't believe you can bombard a planet before you get into the ground battle mode (if you can bombard at all). Thus, having a shield that protects the whole planet would be impossible to deal with and they wouldn't put something like that in a game.

As for the current shield generators, I would imagine that you could make their area of influence larger than the map once the map starts, but then what? With the invader having no way to land troops, there would be no ground battle. Not very feasible in my opinion.

Even Hoth was not completely covered. Is there an example of a planet in the SW universe that is completely surrounded by a shield? And if so, is it only a special case?

Ummhmmm, people, Coruscant is covered by a multi-layered shield, read your books please . Furthermore shields don't indefinitely protect the inhabitants, it just means in the short-run they are immune to bombardments. The gameplay solution is to still allow your fleet to launch a planetary invasion but to deny bombardment. If your fleet camped there for a few weeks and continuously attacked the shield it could also weaken and some such.

I would think that a concentrated bombardment of a small area of a shield would cause it to weaken in that spot for a short while, allowing troop transports and landing craft to get through, possibly bombers to bring down the generator(s) on the inside as well.

However, stronger ray & particle shields, like the one covering the Forest moon of Endor and the DS II, would require a tactic similar to the one used by the Rebels (infiltration and sabotage), if time and speed was the issue.

The NR also used this tactic to bring down Coruscant's massive shields when the planet was liberated.

Coruscant like it was said before. Endor and Aldearan had one as well and they weren't even a very important planets(expect coruscant of course).

Planetary shields are very common especially on the core worlds.

If I recall correctly, either in the live chat or from Delphi, they stated that on some planets the shield generator is outside the shield and on others it is actually inside the shield!! So, in some situations these planets will be harder to take over and planetary bombardments would not be as effective!

Um, which books? Star Wars I, II, III, IV, V or VI? Anything else is pretty much garbage.

Then that's too bad for you. However, you share a minority "elitist"-wannabe attitude and people who have actually read the EU will gladly knock you off your pedestal (not me though).

yeah it looks as if there's a bunch of EU haters in here, your intitled to you opinons but it maynot be "real"star Wars but its not Fan Fiction either Fan Fiction is written by some High Schooler who thinks that they are good at it. but the EU is written primarily by Sci-fi writers that have been pre approved by Lucas.

Well primarily by published writers from other areas, some of them are Fantasy Writers and some are Sci-Fi. Overall the majority publish fantasy works (Except for Zahn who is pure Sci-Fi).

Examples of planetary shields: Nal Hutta, Coruscant, Ukio, and any number of other worlds.

Examples of base shields: Hoth and Borlieas.
