Will units gain veterancy over time? If so, how will this be applied to both ground and space forces?

Since the battles rage fast and furious, the likelyhood of forces surviving for a long period of time makes veterancy moot. However, heroes will persisit, and since they offer such a dramatic shift in power when in battles, they act as your veterans, so-to speak.

Well darn, It seems I'll have something massive to mod.

Why? We don't need to add a verterancy system. The units don't live long enough anyway!

Yes, that's what they said, and then they said that stormtrooper come in companies of 6.. so don't you think if you are a smart commander at least the leader of the squad will survive?

Of course, this isn't like Total War where a unit size is 60 where more likely then not the units will rout before getting all killed ;).

Seems like an interesting omission nevertheless though. I certainly planned on having troops that didn't die ;).

The stormtroopers are in groups of over 30 at least. Look at the screenshots and videos! This isn't BFME people, where they are in groups of 6!

Oh, that's all one company? In that case this does seem like an interesting oversight.

In the Games Convention "demo" stormies came in very, very large numbers and died in those. So they have no use for getting experience. I think the same fits to TIE Fighters ;)

Okay... but what about an elite AT-AT squadron, or better yet an elite X-Wing squadron? Or just space ships in general? I know if I build an ISD it will probably last for many battles...

Plus, can't ships retreat from space battles?!

Well at least we won't have to worry about kepting our vets alive, only our heros.

Also wonn't have to milk my enemy to get all my forces to elite status. I'll just have to wipe them out, all of them.

I must not fear

Fear is the mind-killer

Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration

I will face my fear

I will permit it to pass over me and through me

And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing

Only I will remain

You won't be able to impliment it becuase its not in the core part of the game(ie in the exe) Sorry. :(

They said we can change as much as the designers change, so if enough of the engine is stubbed then I don't see why not.

Fast and furious, high number of deaths... sounds more like C&C than Star Wars :( And I'm concerned about what "dramatic shift" means? I like the star wars units more than the star wars heros. Oh well.

Still... even in C&C units gained veterancy.

Hopefully JI is right in that we'll be able to add and change everything the designers were able to. If thats the case it should be relatively (From a scripting standpoint) to create a veterancy system.

In order to know that however, we've got to get a good look at the code and scripting. I personally would like to have a dynamic system where Experience is represented almost like another healthbar and the number of experience points a unit has the better its performance will be. This could probably be set up by a simple equation.

this is rubbish, battles are not "fast and furious" they last more than 5 minutes which movies and such are trying to say they do, they last hours, if not days/weeks/months.

a raid is fast and furious, a battle is not

but but but......

it goes like this

heroes = units + experience + luck

since luck + experience = vetrean, a hero is just a advanced vetran really

its all soo topsy turvey now!

DOW, which we all know is one of those recent, very popular games doesn't have veterancy. Sure I would have liked it, but it isn't a necessity.

Experience and veterancy was one of those things I was expecting not to make it in game fully, with the exception being I thought heroes might have it. I'm guessing from their response Heroes don't at all, but I would have liked to see them level up.

my post was a bit unclear. I was less concerned with the lack of verterans and more about the description of the battles. "Fast and Furious" "High % of mortality" "Super Heros" :( I had always thought of star wars conflict as slow and deliberate. More about retreating when you are beat than suffering high losses. And heros being a great help to their forces, but not central. Maybe its my view of star wasr that is wrong though.

Not nessicarly. UT2k4 had a mutator called UT2004RPG that has an experience system they coded from scratch. So I'm guessing you can create a experience system for EaW, but it'll just be a pain to do so because the coding will have to be all original.

is there already a team making a reality mod? Seems like speed of battle, verterns, balanced heros and maybe squadron size should be high on the list of things to fix.
Posted
Yeah, I am, but we really haven't started to work on it since we don't know everything we'll want to fix yet or how much room we have to maneuver. We'll have to see the scripting and coding in the game first.

Good to see you Delphi, I keep telling them I don't know cause I haven't seen the way the game is set up...

Okay, here's an alternative...

In build mode you have the option of building Highly Trained, Trained, and Untrained versions of unit... Trained and Highly Trained cost more and take longer to build then Untrained units as well being more expensive. They'll also fire farther, see farther, and aim better then the basic run of the mill troops.

There is an accuracy parameter, right Delphi?

If there's minimum and maximum range values as well as the ability to script in multiple weapons we could also trick the game into having troops seem to have an AI for determining what manner to engage the enemy in.

Say at 100-50 meters the stormies fire single shots (Most Accurate)

50-25 meters they fire three shot bursts (Mid Accuracy)

25-0 They fire their weapons at full auto (Least Accuracy)

Hopefully we'll also be able to script in the use of grenades and thermal detonators by soldiers.

This you could do since you are only making a variant of a unit type. I do it all the time for demos.
