Hurricane Rita gaining power

Hurricane Rita has become a top level Category 5 storm after wind speeds reached 165mph, the US National Hurricane Centre said.The storm, heading for the already ravaged US Gulf coast, is threatening to hit Texas with even greater force than Category 4 Hurricane Katrina inflicted on Louisiana.

 

Hospital and nursing home patients were being evacuated and as many as 1 million other people were

ordered to clear out of the area.

 

The storm is rapidly gaining force as it heads across the Gulf of Mexico.

 

President George Bush said: "We hope and pray that Hurricane Rita will not be a devastating storm. But we got to be ready for the worst."

 

Louisiana state officials said they were taking "extraordinary precautions" as they warned that weakened levees would not cope with another battering.

 

Experts are predicting Rita will hit shore southwest of Galveston, Texas, where at least 8,000 people died in the deadliest US hurricane in 1900.

 

Rita is the ninth hurricane to form in the Atlantic this season and has already caused flooding in Cuba.

 

The hurricane centre said it was likely to hit Texas on Friday or early Saturday.

 

A mandatory evacuation order has been called in Galveston while the state's National Guard troops have been recalled from the Katrina relief effort in Louisiana.

I hope they won't make the same mistakes as with Katrina.

Of all the places... If you were to name the two most vulnerable cities to hurricanes, guess which ones top the list.

 

New Orleans, Lousiana and Galveston, Texas. I guess nature is going to try and take them both out in one season...

You'd be surprised how many fundamentalist whack-jobs actually said things around those lines, in regards to New Orleans' fate. Those people took it to be something like a modern Sodom & Gomorrah.

Um......a plane just had a "safe" emergency landing and i'm starting to believe that CNN wants attention and paying random people to make close disasters so they could get viewers to watch CNN and get brainwashed. Everytime I watch something either happens with planes, robbers/killers, or weather. I'm watching this only because of Rita so see how whats happening to America and what they are up to.

Rita's been downgraded to a Force 3. Its going to be weaker by the time it hits Houston. Orleans is down the toilet again. Another Levee has gone!!

Just playin around. The French colonized their former territory in the New Orleans area with criminals, psychotics, and prostitutes that they wanted to get rid of in Paris and the other major French cities. It's just like Austrailia, because the British did a similar thing with that continent - it was sort of their prison island/colony that they populated with all sorts of ruffians.
