German gamers wowed by impressive Star Wars RTS demonstration.

August 19, 2005 - If you want to make a strategy title right, you might want to hire some ex-Westwood employees. If you want a good RTS with serious selling power, go ahead and make that a Star Wars game. Empire at War is just that combination, and given the crowds and overwhelmingly positive response coming out of Leipzig Games Convention attendees, it's going to be a big game.

Empire at War was on display at Activision's booth because that company has a distribution contract with Lucas worked out. There players could jump on one of four kiosks. Three of them focused on space battling while one was running a Hoth or Hoth-like land battle. Though it should be noted that the builds were totally at the mercy of Leipzig attendees and they had no trouble switching up the maps. Some even tried to get a multiplayer game going.

It seemed, though, that most people were interested in the space battles. 3D on a 2D plane like Conquest: Frontier Wars, Empires' layered space engagements are absolutely enormous. Fighters look pathetic when compared to corvettes, frigates, or star destroyers. But show goers didn't have any problem dealing with it all because the smaller vessels had indicator icons attached to their units (a unit being a squadron of fighters that all fly independently, for instance).

Even if they weren't getting as much attention, the land battles weren't any less impressive. Back on the snow world two AT-ATs and a small handful of Imperial hover tanks approached a shielded Rebel base with legions of shock troops protecting their flanks. As the Imperial troops neared the shield the Rebels began using their fixed defensive measures to stave them off. The fight was hopeless and the graphics were awesome.

While the build at Leipzig looked amazing and helped demonstrate some of the intuitive squad grouping and control functions Empire at War features, it didn't let gamers really appreciate the galactic campaign the developers are working so hard to perfect. That's the biggest draw, too. In it, players can control the fate of an entire galaxy in real-time, For details on that mode and other Empire at War specifics, please see some of our more comprehensive coverage we've done in the past.

is Little.B going to play EaW ? :D

No new screenshots for the moment.

Bit of a late question Ackbar. Anyway, in the interviews so far does anyone get the sense that Petro have a hundred Aces up their sleeves?? I mean I think that there is going to be the SSD, Interceptor and stuff like that. Does anyone think that petro is going to give the hardcore fans stuff like the Defender and Mediator cruisers, TIE Defenders, K-wings, E-wings, Preybirds and the ESD?? Would be cool to use the Galaxy gun and Centrepoint or the Corellian System Repulsors.
