That would be a negative LLF. That particular machine (bucket-wheel excavator) is located in Germany and is used to remove "overburden" for coal mines. Basically it's a giant strip miner, but of course now-a-days after the coal is removed, the "overburden" is returned and the area landscaped to appear as close to it's original configuration as possible.

 

I saw it on Modern Marvels on the History Channel (clip)

 

Now, where have I seen this picture before?

Like Tex explained, a bucket-wheel excavator. There are lots of them around here in the Ruhr district and are used for coal-mining. Sometimes they have to move those giants to another mining-field many kilometers away. That´s such a kind of operation which is seen on the picture above. I thought they would be around everywhere in the world, so you never saw one of those machines?

To my knowledge they arn't used outside of Germany much if at all. Most mining over here is either pit mining or closer to a traditional nature just more mechanized. Ie; Dig a deep hole and branch out tunnels from there.

We've got some equipment like that over here - not sure if it's the same size etc. but they are huge, and have the same circular scoop mechanism.

They are used for mining brown coal which is mostly located just a couple of meters under the surface. Lots of that brown coal can be found in the Ruhr district.

 

BTW don´t want to be the party pooper, but some of your motivational posters show people who aren´t that beautiful and the underline makes jokes about that. It´s not that I havent got any sense of humour nor that I think about myself looking ugly, but I do feel that the internet is a good place to judge people about how they do act, by their heart and soul and not by their appearance. Just a side note. Now back to topic again.
