Retarded Landlords

On a side note, my bus driver when I was in middle school was some crazy guy who always yelled for no reason and didn't like book bags for some reason...

Bus drivers are often rather weird!

In retrospect I really had no right to commandeer the thread to complain about my little incident- It really was nothing compared to what you're dealing with, Rob. I was just kinda loopy from blood-loss and walking.

I hope things turn out well for your GF, mate! :(

Well, here is some potentially bad news.

The girls living upstairs had their fridge go bad this semester, so it leaked through the floor and ruined the kitchen tiles. They had some contractors come by today, and when they pulled up the tile they found a layer of carpet that was ruined and covered in mold, and they also found what they think might be asbestos. Anywho, they called the Board of Health, who are swinging by the apartment tomorrow, and I dont think this place meets their standards in several respects.

So my worry is if I will have an apartment to return to next semester. I went about town yesterday with the weekend paper in hand searching for new accomodations for next semester, but most people want to sign a contract from June-May, and I dont plan on living up here for the summer too. I would like to be back home with family and friends for a bit. So now I really gotta find something. I may put up some posters or something tomorrow at school.

Edit:

I got to talking some more with the upstairs tenants. Apparently, the two of them pay less rent for their decenter apartment than he pays me. We also found out that the landlord does not have permits for this place either. They are planning on filing a suit against him, and Im thinking if I should jump in too. I'll wait and see how things go with the health inspector tomorrow before I decide. I want to see how bad this place really is.

Well the inspector came by today, and he said, and I do an exact quote "I could throw you out right now if I wanted to". Apparently, my apartment does not meet any of the towns fire-codes, as in there is no window in my bedroom, there is only one smoke detector in my apartment, there is only one way in or out of my apartment (through the main door), and apparently the ceilings are too low. As far as the asbestos goes, he didnt know if it was that or not, but is sending someone in tomorrow to take a sample and see if it is.

Anywho, he called the landlord today, so when I got out of work tonite there were 3 missed calls from him, which I was not surprised about. But he left me a voicemail saying that he decided to rent me the upstairs apartment by myself next semester. So Im scared, because I have a feeling that he wants me to do some of the minor repairs myself while I live there to cover the cost of living in a 2-bedroom apartment alone. But I dont really know what he wants exactly. Im gonna have to call him tomorrow and see.

First off Rob, don't call him ... wait 'til he calls you (make him sweat a bit  ). Under NO conditions should you do repairs, unless you're ... appropriately compensated  I would say on the lines of FREE rent, and the necessary safety equipment (all at his expense, of course). If it is asbestos, you don't want to mess with the stuff. You could get into BIG trouble (health wise and by the civil authorities). I'd be interested to hear what he wants and how he's going to try and screw you at the same time :?

Well, he called me three more times today while I was in school, so I called him back after classes. What happened is that the girls upstairs wanted to screw him over, so they didn't do much in the way of trying to find replacement tenants for their apartment next semester. So he has no one lined up to rent it (despite the fact that he told me he had a bunch of people waiting to see it back in the day). Also, since he couldnt get students to rent it next semester, he doesn't want to rent it out as a full-time place for non-students, because he likes to use it as a vacation place over the summer, which is why he only rents to students.

So to make a long story short, he offered me the apartment simply because no one else was gonna take it. He will charge me the same price ($2000 a semester) to have the whole place to myself. He will be doing all the repairs over the summer, and since the Department of Health was called in, they will have to do an investigation before the fall to ensure everything is up to code. So I wont be doing any repair work on it. I guess he figured that if no one was gonna rent the upstairs apartment, I mine as well. And I will attempt to get a roomie for the next spring semester, where he will then knock my rent down a few hundred for that semester.

All in all, as long as the flooring is repaired and safe, Im gonna take it. Most of the problems I have in my current apartment are all cosmetic/comfort. The only real problem the girls had was their fridge and the floor, and they bought a new fridge a few months ago after the thing died. So as long as the floor is nice, I'm sold.

In case I didn't mention it, the things lacking in my current apartment that I would get in this next apartment are: a living room (right now my apartment pretty much has one room that is a kitchen/living room/study area), a stove (right now I have to use a hot plate and the toaster), cable tv (I have to watch DVDs from my lappy or watch tv shows off the net), a kitchen sink larger than 2inches, and ceilings higher than 6feet (its not a prob for me since Im like 5 1/2 tall, but my friend came up last semester, and he hit his head a few times).

So thats that. Gosh I had alot to say.

Rob, check your calculator. $2,000 for 1 semester for 1 person; if you have a roomate (that's now 2 people), why wouldn't your rent be $1,000 for 1 semester for you? :? Since the landlord doesn't live on or near the premises, he'll never know you have a roomie

I could very well do that, but if he was to find out he would be none to happy. I might try and get a roomie for the Spring. Then again, a 2-bedroom apartment to myself is nothing to scoff at.

Update on the retarded landlord:

Well, he never sent me the lease for the apartment for this fall. So I called him last week, and he said he would send it out. Well, he called me yesterday morning, and said that I can't have the apartment. He started whining about how his wife is divorcing him, and his girlfriend wants to move away, and what it all comes down to is that he wants to sell the apartment, and doesn't want anyone living in it as he is selling it.

So now, with school only a month away, I have no where to live. I have to waste one of my coveted days off to go up there now and find something else...

Don't forget to pack lots of greasy meat, your dog and some eggs. Let your dog eat most of the greasy meat; throw the rest, plus the eggs and whatever the dog "processes" of the greasy meat at the "former" apartments. It'll sell quick with the new "decorations"

What an @$$hole! Sheesh, no warning at all, and he's just booting you out like that?!? That's, to quote the name of this thread, retarded! Can you see about getting on-campus housing at all maybe?

On-campus housing is my last resort. I am not too keen on living on campus and having to deal with relying on the cafeteria and eating out for meals. I enjoyed being able to cook in my last apartment. But I believe that I will be able to get one if it comes down to that, so I dont think I have to worry about being out on the street or anything.

Im gonna go up Wednesday and hopefully I'll be able to find somebody looking for a roommate or something like that through one of the apartment rental companies. There's like four major ones, who own the majority of the apartments in town. I'll also be checking the paper out to see what the locals are offering. So hopefully I'll be successful Wednesday.

I just hope I dont get stuck with one worse than last semesters, but I dont think that is possible...

Seriously though, what a wank stain. Good luck with your new apartment and with any vengeance that may be in the works

The apartment hunting mission to Oneonta was successful.

I found an agency that had four listings, and by the end of the day I found one that I liked. Its a 3-bedroom house, where the two other tenants are brothers who will be going to Oneonta also. I didn't get to meet them since they looked at the place yesterday, so I hope they are cool.

The location is nice, only a 2 minute drive from the school. It also has its own driveway and parking lot, so I dont have to park in the street. I will be paying the same amount I paid for the last apartment, but it is in much better condition and is much bigger. Its two stories, with the kitchen, living room, and my room on the ground floor, and the other two bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. All in all, I am very pleased and relieved to have found something so easily. I can breathe easy now, knowing I have a home for the coming semester.

PS- I did a drive-by espionage mission to my old place. There is no for sale sign, and there were several cars in the driveway. This leads me to believe that he was bs'ing me, and that he simply was able to find two students to take my apartment. But whatever. Im happy now.

Good to hear, Rob! :D Now be sure to look up the old landlord's actual address and egg it after a sufficient amount of time has passed for him to forget about you. :twisted:Cue Tex to mention something about what Texans do to annoying landlords.

I hope those brothers are cool; Not having a brother I have no idea if brothers generally get along with one another or not, so here's hoping you don't get caught in the middle of a family soap opera every few days.

Now the only thing left is to call my old landlord one last time and remind him that he "forgot" to reimburse me for the security I put down for the apartment last year.

Remind the slimy git that you can sue him for booting you out after you paid the security as well. What a prick!

Still, it turned out for the better, and that's all that counts.

Well I moved in today, and it couldn't be greater.

The apartment itself is mad nice. We set up a living room/dining room (the room is HUGE), and theres the kitchen. My bedroom came along very nicely, and theres still a ton of room after all the crap I brought with me.

The other great thing is that my roommates, two brothers, are both gamers, and they both brought their Wii and PS2 also. So I forsee quite a few drunken' games nights in the future.
