I have a test in Oceanography today at 10am (its about 8:15am now). I really should be studying, but instead I seem to be surfin' the net...

My bio teacher last year was awesome. His tests were always with a hand-out and a scantron. You kept the handout and filled your answers in on the scantron. Then, after you turned it in, he spot-checked it and you got your grade right away.

 

One day we had a test on evolution. The question read a lot like this:

 

Evolution is

 

a) A Law

b) Not regarded as anything by most scientists

c) A theory

d) none of the above

 

He asked, "Are there any Creationists in the room?" When nobody raised their hand, he said, "Alright, then. A and C are both correct answers. Anyone who says differant isn't particularly bright. Next question."

The test was on the ocean water itself, as in its composition, and the mysteries of tides and waves. I actually think I did pretty decent. Ive gotten an 81 on the previous two, and if I get an 81 again I'll probably laugh. I hate science, and unfortunatly, this class combines all the sciences together, like this particular test had physics and chemistery on it. Bleh.

I don't mind Biology but must admit to not being a great fan of physics or chemistry.

By "I hate science" I mean "I hate science-related work in school". Science and math are the two subjects I hate with a passion. Math more than science. All throughout my schoolingness, I have always excelled in History and English classes. But when it came to the practical, formulaness of math and science, I was awful. I was sooo glad that the college I'm at now accepted my math and science from my old college (which was 5 years ago).

so what about historical scientific advances and the such?.. do you hate that as well?... am i to assume that your not interested in that aspect of history?

No, no, no. I just don't like getting in-depth into it, like all the formulas for chemistry and physics.

I very much accept science, and am definitly an evolutionist, if that's what you were thinking. Not to open up the whole religion vs science thing, but I am content melding the two together...I like to believe that there is a God and an afterlife and all, but at the same time I believe that everything in science is just how God makes it work.

What Rob is trying to say is this, I believe: He finds Science fascinating. He finds the large amounts of pain-in-the-ass, if-you-make-one-mistake-your-screwed equations and the like that go with it.

 

For instance, I chemistry is currently one of my favourite subjects. I like some of the in-depth views on differant aspects of the world around me, and how they were discovered. I do not enjoy figuring out how many molecules 2.68 grams of hydrochloric acid contains. As in, at all. Mole conversions suck.

Chemistry seems to be one of the worse lessons I have this year... Mainly because the teacher is far too over-zealous.

We are now learning about the biology of the ocean, as in the different fish, sharks, whales, that kind of stuff. Here's todays quote while showing us a slide of a humpback whale jumping out of the water:

 

"I am not easily impressed. Seeing a 40-ton sack of blubber come leaping out of the water and doing a backflip in mid-air is very impressive. I went to the Grand Canyon and hiked up and down it. That was impressive. I saw a gogo dancer once...but let's not get into that."

 

And another one while showing us a slide of a narwhal:

 

"You see, the Japanese float around looking for narwhals because they use the big tooth as an aphrodisiac. They grind it up and use it when they get in bed. Supposedly, you can last DAYS in bed with that. But that's a bit too much...I think you would get sore."

 

He's a character...but it makes the class a tad more interesting.

And then there's the stupid one-liners, such as "whales are warm-blooded, just like you and me. Then again, I'm not too sure about 2 or 3 of you..."

So today was my last final, being Oceanography. Well, about 1/2 hour after the test starts, these 2 girls walk in all giggling and like "heehee sorry we're late". And he's like "well you're late, I can't let you take the final now. The first person already completed it and handed it in, so I can't let you do it." So they argued for a bit, but he stood his ground, and they got 0's on their finals. Then about 5 minutes later another guy walks in, and the same thing...0. And then like 45 minutes after the final starts some other guy walks in, and he got a big old 0. I chuckled to myself about how much it much suck to get a 0 on your final cause you're to lazy to wake up for an 8:00am test. Heehee.

Rather than creating a new thread titled "Crazy Caribbean Peoples & Culture Professor", I decided to recycle. I love the earth that much.

 

So my Caribbean Peoples & Culture Professor is quite odd. He handed out the syllabus/course outline, and it stated in big bold letters "The CDs containing music relevant to this course are on reserve in the library. You must listen to the assigned tracks prior to each class". Then as he's talking he says, "This is not a music course. There is absolutely no music involved in this course." So one kid raises his hand and asks what's up with the syllabus. The professor just shakes his head and says "I miss tobacco. I haven't had a cigarrette in 40 years. But I've had a few joints since then..."

 

I think it will prove to be an interesting class.
