Under utilised characters

I think it is widely agreed that Jar Jar Binks was the most annoying and quite possibly the most over used character in the Star Wars movies.

I got to thinking, Who of characters in the movies didn't receive enough time in the movies that was cool enough to receive a bigger role? Who had a role that didn't do the character justice?

I think Boba Fett's role wasn't big enough or deep enough.

Darth Maul is someone I personally would've liked to have seen more of.

Darth Maul was just an on-screen average bad guy... he has a much deeper history in the novels. Too bad he never really had the depth as Darth Vader's character in the movies. Also Count Dooku (Darth Tyrannus) was used in the same way... while he actually had some good lines, much more of his background is developed from the books. If you just saw Episode 2 and Episode 3 only, you would figure he's just another average bad guy seduced by power.

There is an interesting quote by Harrison Ford... he was expecting a much better resolution with Boba Fett. He was saying after reading the script of Return of the Jedi... he was expecting Boba Fett to turn out to be Luke's mother! That would have really been an interesting twist. Of course, Harrison Ford also wanted the Han Solo character to die in the movie. :)

Mark Hamil commented that he thought Boba Fett was given the short end of the stick in return of the Jedi.

Something along the lines of Boba Fett was supposed to be this reaaly good bounty hunter and they got rid of him rather cheaply.

Thats not a direct quote but basically what I think he said or meant.

Darth Maul was an average bad guy, but then again after having the Ãœber bad guy in Darth Vader I guess you can't win them all. I do think his character could've been better if it did show more of him. From a certain point of view he was little more than a glorified storm trroper as much of the time he was given he was fighting or chasing down the good guys. I think there are probably storm troopers who had more dialogue than he did!

Personally I think that Boba Fett had the ability to become a really cool character in the OT, but they messed him up in the end making a joke about how he died (didn't he fly out of Sabaac in one of the books?).

I could live with that, but then Lucas began expanding his character in the Prequel showing his emotions and history and stuff. They really just made their mistake greater there, or so I would say...

Enough has already been said about Jar Jar

Another character I would have liked to see more of in the OT is Mon Mothma, I mean she is the leader of the Rebels but is hardly given screen time...

Anybody read the comic where somebody cloned Maul, and Palpy sent Vader to wreck their cloning operation (this is the early days of the Empire) and Maul was totally waxing Vader's ass until Vader stabbed himself through his own guts to kill the Maul clone coming up behind him? Awesome.

Huh??? :?

Hmm, sounds kind of curious...

BTW a clone of Darth Maul wouldn't necessarily have force powers would it? Just think about the Dorsk 81 (or 82, can't seem to remember) situation he is the 81. clone in a row and he was the only one with forcepowers...

I can understand how Palpys clone kept his powers but Maul was nowhere near that powerfull was he??? :?:

More on Maul for the Prequel movies would have definitely added some depth (as well as Dooku & Grievious). For the OT, I would have liked to have seen more on Piett and Ozzel, as well as Rieekan and Akbar (Boba Fett was already mentioned) 8)

Piett and Darth Maul are the two I would liked to have seen expanded.

About the history of Darth Maul: There was alot of non-cannon stuff written about him.

I rahter think Ackbar was enough. Piett was a great character, and although he had only a few lines, his acting was superb. I vote for Piett too. But Boba Fett get's 1 point.

Oh and don't forget the Rancor's beastmaster.

i Think mon mothma, tarkin, boba fett (not included how they screwed him), maul, dooku and grievous all could have been given more background / screen time... ackbar could have benefited from it.. but it wasnt necessary... honestly though... the whole rebellion could have used more air time in the OT... you never really knew how big it was or who it involved really until i think RotJ.... but.. yea..

I think that all of the rebellion leaders did not get near enough time.

And Biggs, Luke kept saying stuff to him, but you have to pay attention just to figure out who he is.

I would also like to see more of Dooku, in the films there were only hints at what he did, and it seemed much cooler than what he did on screen.

And kill Jar-Jar

Disregarding all new evidence everywhere.

On the subject of cloning: Timothy Zahn screwed it up for the expanded universe when he began cloning the best pilots, troops, and engineers for his forces. They supposedly needed no training to be as good as the fellows they were cloned from when, in fact, they would have the intillect of a child and would be incapable of doing squat. As a matter of fact, they could be very different than the person they are cloned after.

'Nough said on the "I frigging hate Timothy Zahn's books" front from me.

I personally would have liked to see more of A) Maul and B) Qui-Gon (Primarily because Lam Nieson is a pretty damned good actor)

... I also get slightly teary eyed during that scene, J... He was so close to getting the poor thing to freedom, and then Luke had to go and... GAH! *Runs away crying to watch episode six*

Weren't the clones flash-trained? Basically all the informaton was implanted into them. And even Zahn acknowledges that not all the clones were the same as their original, to the point Fel's clones actively help out Luke and Mara. They wanted to protect their homes and their way of life rather than hep the Empire.

How could he have screwed it up if that information didn't exsist at the time? He basically made the whole thing up himself.

Yes, i believe you are correct Def. I went searching for it and found it. This was stated right before it

Warning: The following section is non-canon. It contains information explicitly released under the Infinities brand, confirmed to be non-canon by the author or Lucasfilm, or cut from the final release of a Star Wars media.
