Yup, they make most of our shoes as well... Anyway, don't you guys feel that we should ate least try to reason with China when it comes to freedom of speech?

I seem to remember on the last two occassions the Chinese head of state visited London Tony Blair did his best to make him feel very welcome. The last time the Chinese delegation stayed at Buckingham Palace with the Queen with all the pomp and splendor that entails, and the previous time human rights protesters were airbrushed out of the picture by the police.

I think China is economically to important for our economies to risk offending. It's also one of the five permenant members of the security council, which is about the only real power of the United Nations.

Ah, well there might be the issue of the matter for that -particular Chinese delegation- correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they (mostly) see women not as humans but more as possessions and lower than men in every way shape and form? Not that I agree with it, but they might find it highly offensive for a woman to be in such a position of power...

I understand a lot of the arguments made but, quite frankly, the United Nations is the only thing we got, people...

I wasn't aware of specific female oppression in that sense, Tofu... :?

Chairman Mao got rid of the lower status of women, about the only positive thing that has come out of his communist ideology...

Though even now chinese couples prefer to have a boy rather than girl. Generaly they try again until they have a boy even if this is against the law.

I didn't know that the oppression was over... I assumed it was still ongoing. Is China still officially the only country to have a secret police for Atheism, though?

I don't know about that last bit, but bear in mind George Bush visited a Christian church when he was in China not so long ago. The Chinese tolerate stuff if they control it. Think of the persecution of the Galun Hong* sect. They don't control it! My friend told me an interesting episode. The Galun Hong orginized some form of demonstration and terrified the Chinese authorities by how well organized it was-no litter, completely peaceful, thus shooting themselves in there own foot by how well organized it was. It was this self management the authorities found so alarming, given they have no control over it...

*EDIT: *paranoid mode* right, i've just edited the name of the sect due to a sudden bout of paranoia and realization the glorious great motherland will be monitoring any occurance of it on the internet, and i'm going to edit a few other things previously. Call me paranoid. The sect's correct name can be got by replacing the first letter of each word by the letter previous in the alphabet.
