I never run a game that long to really mass such a fleet

Yes the Katana fleet. When i got the game bout a year after it came out the computer i had was running on a pentium 60 (sys. req. was spossed to b 90) it had 16K RAM. i started a Rebel game and i still have that file. i played that particular game for 5 years (at least) on that dinosaur of a computer

I actually did do that once. I made an entire fleet of Dreadnauts (I can't remember how many I ended up making) playing as the Empire, and terrorized the galaxy!

I sort of did that as the Rebels just because my ship design missions were taking forever. See, the Imps were being stupid as heck and coming up to planets with two shield generators and bombarding them. Meanwhile I had special forces beneath the shield who promptly sabotaged the forces in space

Close. I built a bleet of over 200 Escort Frigates once, just for fun. Worked great against the comp, until attrition and a lack of starfighters caught up with me.

 

Blasted SSDs can really pack a whollop in groups of four. My poor fleet was in rough enough shape, they never had a chance.

By the time I decided to try it, the Empire didn't have much left, I had to go searching for a fleet to fight, when I finally found one, I had to wait for 3-5 min just for the fleets to get close enough together to begin taking shots at each other.
