Lord_La_forge Posted February 21, 2003 Posted February 21, 2003 I had some problems with the color palettes. I made a card in photoshop. All my pictures worked fine in the game, except the one, wich is displayed at the characters status screen. The bluebox just don't wan't to disappear! The other pix are ok, and all of them used 0,0,255 for the background. The second problem is the games color palette. If you generate a bitmap in photoshop, it will use his own generated pal. except, if you load the pal. used for the original characters. Rebed also converts RGB mode bmps to 256 colored bmps. So here's the question: Will the game always use it's own pal. for my pics? Does the game see my generated pal., or does it simply convert the picture again for it's own pal.? Rebellion uses redrawn photos ripped from the movies. The other characters (Thrawn, Daala) must been done the same way. They perhaps made some pictures from relatives or friends, redrawn it to 256 color... It's possible, that one of the games inventor used his own photo too.. So we just have to make some photos from some characteristic people, and redraw it to bitmaps. Once we know, how to do that, we'll be able to generate cards with similar quality in 265 color.
Lord_La_forge Posted February 21, 2003 Author Posted February 21, 2003 Or we just use comic style drawings. But I think, they don't look so good with this game. Simply using photos is also problematic, cuz the most of my photos looked supaugly in 256 color
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted February 22, 2003 SWR Staff - Executive Posted February 22, 2003 For palettes, just use Paint Shop Pro. Copy your picture to a Rebellion template - a picture with Rebellion's palette - and PSP should convert it automatically. Makes excellant conversions, though may need tweaking by hand. Err.. if the blue isn't disappearing, make sure your corners are set to 255 blue, 0 red, 0 green... hopefully RebED will detected it and make it work. As far as I know, LEC had actual graphics designers do it to their specs. We don't have that kind of time or talent. I'd prefer comic style over real-people... just makes it more Star Wars-y and less fake. Yes, "fake" is a relative term, since its a game.. but unless we decide to render every image, comic book style is easier to keep uniform than real-people style. Lord_La_forge Posted February 22, 2003 Author Posted February 22, 2003 Thank you for the help Evader!I didn't tried PSP yet. Perhaps it converts palettes bether than Photoshop. Speaking of graphic designers, well I am one of them. I finished an Art school this year, so I am very curious.. I will keep trying to draw over some pictures I made. Sure it takes its time, but I just love perfection! (that's why I'm playing always the Empire!) It would be sure easier to have support from the original graphic designers...
Juunana Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 Alright, I am having a horrible time with the status screen picture. I've created about 10 cards all in exactly the same way, and about 8/10 of those cards still have blue backgrounds on the status screen! Two of them work just find and dandy, but I can not for the life of me get the rest to work. Help! http://forumpic18.homestead.com/files/juunana2.jpg

I'm no expert but in my experiance you generally have to reduce the size down to something near the size of the template. I'm presuming you mean the Build/system entry? Click on the arrows for the fleet and tactical, rebEd does it for you. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
Juunana Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 I did that. I have every picture at the right size and at 256 colors. When I test them in the game, every picture looks fine with the exception of the status screen picture. That one is still surrounded by the blue color, and I can not for the life of me get rid of it. http://forumpic18.homestead.com/files/juunana2.jpg
Jahled Posted March 1, 2003 Posted March 1, 2003 I'm not entirely certain why you concerned with 256 colours with cards! You don't need to be! I've never had to adjust a card to 256 or whatever, it's either a good image or it's not. I wouldn't know how to adjust anything to '256' anyhow! Dude, email me all the images concerning one of the cards that's giving you problems and i'll have a look in photoshop. jahled@madasafish.com http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted March 1, 2003 SWR Staff - Executive Posted March 1, 2003 Probably Anti-aliasing is on with your picture program. This makes the pixels near your image blend with blue, producing the blue-aura surrounding your picture. You'll need to start from the beginning and make sure your picture isn't saved with Anti-aliasing. SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted March 2, 2003 SWR Staff - Executive Posted March 2, 2003 Anti-Aliasing... I really don't want to explain. In Paint Shop Pro, go to File -> Preferences -> File Format Preferences -> Postscript and uncheck Antialiasing.
