With the release of the new video-capable iPod and the recent flurry of discussion about it arount the 'net, I felt it was appropriate to bring a little of that excietment here to swrebellion.

I know for a fact that my parents will be getting me a video-capable iPod for Christmas, at the latest. I have been holding out on replacing my cheap iPod mini in hopes of a new model being released. I plan to stock it with all the tunes of my ancient 4 GB (yes, you heard right- 4GB) iPod plus more. I hope to find a way to put DVDs onto it through my computer, though that 2.5" screen is gonna be a big headache, but I think it will be worth it for the next long car trip or flight.

The only negative thing for me, really, is the lack of a FireWire port, as I have several older acessories (FM transmitter, for example) that ran on the FireWire port. I will just replace them with USB 2.0 things then, which is probably exactly what Apple wants, but is, as I see it, unavoidable.

Anyway, just curious about how many of you out there actually own iPods (or will get one soon).

< PS: anyone know of a case that fits the video iPod? I couldn't find anything on Apple's site that would fit the slimmer model. Any help is much appreciated. >

I've never really understood the allure tothe iPods. I know that the Nano is really thin, but they're also prone to cracking due to sudden changes in temperature, as well as scratching (some of the people in my program wrap their iPod Nanos in cellophane to protect them). As for the iPod Video... just get a portable DVD player. I couldn't watch any video on a 2.5 inch screen!

I guess the up-side to a regular iPod is that they hold alot more than your regular MP3 player. It's always nice to have that much space, but since I'm so pickey with my music, I'd never use most of it.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

No plans to get an iPod. I just don't buy Apple products.

They are good brand, if you want to pay for the brand name. But often you can get better products for much cheaper.

Nothing against the company, they did a good job at marketing their products. The iPod, though not original, was a great marketing campaign for them. But personally, I'm not a Mac user. Nor do I subscribe to the idea that "everyone should get on because its stylish" :)

I've gotten some cheap flash drive MP3 players, they work just fine for my needs. I have not gotten into the large capacity ones yet, but from what I'm reading, I really like the Creative Zen Xtra 60 gig. Large capacity, great sound quality, good price too. Acts as a hard drive connection on your computer too.

I have no intention on buying one of those ipods, or any other mini mp3 playing device. I have no use for it. I have a CD player in my room (mp3 capable), my car stereo can play mp3's, and I also have a mp3-capable CD player in my office at work. I think the ipods are a ridiculous waste of your hard-earned moola!!!

I gotta agree with Rob. Somehow I think that the Ipods will be like Pokemon cards and beanie babies- really popular for a couple of months, maybe even a year, and then one day you'll deny having even touched one because they're so un-cool all of a sudden.

I know what you mean Tofu, but thats why they keep creating newer, better, cooler models. The video iPod is really an iPod with the added function of being able to play videos. I feel that Apple is just testing the waters of the portable video market with this. It is my belief that some time in 2006, Apple will release a more video/movie-centered iPod. I know I'll be first in line for something like that. :)

I'm pretty much on the same page as Evaders and GAT here. I'm not a huge Mac fan (yet I use them for design at Uni - I'd prefer to use a PC though), even though they're generally good quality.

From what my friends have shown me of the iPods - I'm sticking away from them. If I were to get an MP3 player - I'd get a different brand like Creative that's, in my opinion, more bang for your buck.

For now, I'll stick to my CD players (I'd stick to my car CD player, but I sold the car 2 weeks ago  ) and my MD player.*

I have little want for a small movie player like the new iPod movie**. I personally prefer to use my*** Sony Wega Widescreen TV and DVD player over that - if I watch a movie, I want to experience it in its fully. It's like watching a cheap bootleg of a movie and being disappointed just by its quality.

But that's just me

*Could be a copy of Jahled's footnotes

**Not the name I call them by - my name goes along the lines of what I think of their quality and all the hack "celebrities" that advertise these products

I have an iRiver H340 (just discontinued a few weeks ago). It OWNS the iPod. OWNS it, I tell you.

-OGG support

-plug it in, acts as a USBv2 HDD

-.txt support

-AVI support (via any-firmware-except-for U.S., I flashed my firmware to the Korean version, freeware anything-to-AVI converter, it's great)

-FM tuner

-picture support

I got the C. Crane FM Transmitter, and now it's heaven to listen to when I'm driving (none of the trucks I drive have a cassette deck, or a line in port).

I used to have one but was disappointed when it stopped working wardly a year after i bought it.

I now own a Samsung YH-920 that I got for 200 Euros. Its got 20 gigs and i found it very good.

I must say i do not perticularly dislike Apple. I own a Mac mini for surfing the net and keeping all my musig on and it works very well.

  • 2 months later...
I got a new Samsung MP3 for Christmas. Nice little model, only thing that stinks is that it won't take MP4s off of my sister's computer :? Took two days for her to convert them all to MP3s

It's just a matter of trend, iPods are imho overvalued, I've heard only bad things about them.

i'm happy with my Sony MP3, flash drive, it's what I need. What would I do with 20GB?...

I haven't got one but would like one. I must say that I rather like the iPod. To be honest, this has a lot to do with style and design. Then again, I prefer using iTunes to manage my mp3s as well, so that's another reason.

I must admit, though that the iPod Nano's coating was bad, though...

Yes, I think iPod is more like a trend, or a tool of design. Of course it's highly compatible with iTunes and other "i" stuff, but there are a lot of plugins for portable devices for each media player. Musicmatch does support quite a bunch of them atleast.

I have an older (I bought it last year) ipod (20GB). I must say, I love it!!! I usedit all summer while I was hiking and writting and now I use it everyday when I work. The job I have involves loud noise for extended periods of time, so I wear headphones anyway, so I just put my iPod on and work the day away. It has also been great for trips (when my iTrip is working right). I have my entire thesis backed up on it and 15 days worth of non-stop music. So, I love mine! Best investment I have made in a long time. I saw a color screened one the other day that was nice, but mine is still working well so I will hold off on buying a new one. The b/w screen can be hard to see sometimes on mine.

My Verizon cell phone is SUPPOSED to be an mp3 player. I had to buy a 1GB mini flashcard to store the music on, but the damn phone won't recognize the card! I took it to the local Verizon dealer, and the lady said to me "are you sure you put mp3's on the card?". Like I put music in another format on the card. I don't get it. She put her card in my phone and it worked fine. So I said maybe it's the card. But when I pop my card into the computer, the computer reads it and all the files on it fine. So the phone is not broken, the card is not broken, but the process won't work!!!

Very aggrevating.
