Ship Request: Hapan Cruiser

The Hapan Battle Dragon.

The most powerful ships of the fleets belonging to the Hapes Consortium. Goodness knows we have enough cards for this ship floating arround. Not to mention the Nova Class Cruiser which acts as escort for the Dragons.

 

I know there are models of this ship arround somewhere, so the best option would be to just convert one to Rebellion.

The Hapan Battle Dragon is a good model for most people to try. It's based around simple geometry (A lot of elongated cylinders) and can be made almost entirely out of a single cylinder just by extruding it.

I'd suggest this to anyone whos been practicing modelling and wants a bit of a challenge - I might give it a shot if I find time and then pass it over to anyone wanting to texture it. But I stress might

 

 

@D16: As for using those models from SWMA, there are a few things about them. First, and most important, you'd need to get permission before you use them in the game. You'd need to credit them for the model as well. Also, keep in mind that these models are high poly models and could have have upwards of 20 thousand polys. Ideally, when creating a model for rebellion, you should aim for 2-3 thousand polys for the high detail model as too not overload the game. There are some models around 14k for Rebellion which work, though in numbers run slow.

Remember, Rebellion is old and isn't meant to have high poly models.

Anyways I was just pointing out one possible place. It was the first one I found in five minutes of searching. I understand that they're high poly and was thinking that it would be better as an example of good model working.

 

I remember an old untextured model of the ship in the mod for Homeworld 1. (Even it seemed to have a poly count on the high side.) The New Rebellion Mod? I forget, it's been 2 years since I tried it.

The close model has 1899 polys, the far currenlty has 710 and will loose some more soon. Still got work to do, more textures and then throwing it into the game and testing it blah blah :P

I'm adding more colour now as well, like? I might go back and add more red to the NR ships I've done, just for contrast

A little bad news - due to current RL (ie. job and uni work) obligations and work on Reloaded, the Battle Dragon has been put on the backburners - so she'll be a while before getting finished.

I'll try to work on it whenever I get an extra free chance, texturing is boring but can be deliteful after doing some other mundane work :wink:

Wow, tripple post . . . do I win a prize? :P

 

After a mishap at uni resulting in me loosing a USB Flash drive and a lot of uni work and other work (including what I was working on, which put this on hold) I've finished texturing the Hapan Battle Dragon.

*Cough* On a serious note - it should be released for download very soon after the usual testing phase.

 

I'm also creating a small document of "things to do" for my models. After I get them all done, I'll then try remaking the textures and hopefully they'll look better than they do now - sowhere along the lines of Mask's textures.

As well as re-scalling the models, the larger they are in the game the less problems you have with the z-buffer issue of faces disappearing everynow and again. Though, considering that the Battle Dragon is meant to be 500 metres, and an ISD 1600 metres it wont be too much bigger.

And finally, LOD models for all of them. So, if you wont a massive fleet of a couple of hundred ships your computer wont strain as much

I think, I'll be calling it quits for the time being with modelling. I've got to get through something for RR and that'll be it until I finish Uni for the year - with exceptions of my usual experiments :wink:

Seriously this is crazy good.

Have you tested weather the Drive engine light... thingy shows up well in game yet?

(Man I'm busy with my job now. I should probably stop trying to play Fable. :) )

It's the drug of . . . . nope, aint got nothing :roll::P

 

Can't remember how the engines came out in game - without the game engine supporting self-illumination textures (generally a gray scale textures that "lights" up sections of the texture irrelavent to scene lighting), there's little that can be done.

This is a problem I've had with most models and I might experiement to see how to fix it. The original models had the engines on the surface of the ship and not in actual engine shaped objects which might be casting a shadow or equivalent.

 

The model comes up pretty well - though there are a few clipping problems in different areas.

When I "re-release" the model, I think I'll make it phisically larger in game to help with the problems. When I had it in the game not properlly scalled, I didn't notice any problems with glitches (re-enforcing my belief about the engines small z-buffer). But is too big for the actual game :roll:

Ok, since people have started asking me about the NJO mod again it's time to ask the incredible model makers here for a request or two.

 

Current request is the Hapan Nova class Battlecruiser.

 

Found some nice diagrams of several ships taken from the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessles here.

Please note that i am going to release a debugged version of the world ship as well. Just one question. Do you like its size or should i resize it?

Umm.... I need to re-check it again. The Worldship looked ok (Though bigger is always better :wink: ) But the only ship I really compared it to was an MC-80b that the Rebels were attacking it with.

 

I wouldn't be too concerned about resizing it.

Which ship is that Mad? It looks like a Nebulon-B 2 or something. If it's from the EU that would explain why I don't recognise it though, I tend to ignore the descriptions and make up my own appearances in my mind :lol:.

 

EDIT:Never mind, I just read the first part of your post. I tend to gravitate towards pictures and then text when I'm reading posts. Now that I acutally know what it is, looks good Mad :D.
