DarthTofu Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Okay, this isn't trying to be a stupid American (it comes naturally) but I've always wondered- how in the world do you play Cricket? I know that you have bats, a red ball that you hit, and, I think, bases, making it sort of like baseball, only not really. Anyone care to explain what exactly it is? I'm too lazy to go to google and read up on the non-laymen's version. 12/14/07Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la Not gone, merely marching far away
Jahled Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Cricket is a very strange game. I've spent may a long, long afternoon in deep outfield wondering what on earth i'm doing. From deep outfield you get a lot of time to do stuff like look at the clouds and ponder life's many mysteries, such as why beating a BBC company team is so important to a managing director who is virtually always bowled out for a duck. It's so slow, you can do things in the deep outfield like drink beer and smoke. I believe I became a Buddhist from my many experiances in the deep out field. Once I thought I was near Australia. Then there's the batting. It is a truely terrifying experiance, even in the face of a non-proffesional bowler. Cricket balls are very hard. I was always usually near to the back of the batting order on account of how crap I am at keeping my composure in the face of naked logic, hoping we would declare before I ever got to bat, though I once hit a four against the ITN news team for my former chauffeur company. Rules? Never quite worked them out. I hope this helps. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif

SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted August 25, 2005 SWR Staff - Executive Posted August 25, 2005 All I know about cricket.. The British sport of cricket, as it turns out, came about as the result of a vague interspecies collective unconscious memory; everyone with knowledge of the Krikkit Wars is quite disgusted by how the humans turned it into a sport.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life%2C_the_Universe%2C_and_Everything Evaders99http://swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif Webmasterhttp://swrebellion.com/images/banners/swcicuserbar.png Administrator Fighting is terrible, but not as terrible as losing the will to fight.- SW:Rebellion Network - Evaders Squadron Coding -The cake is a lie.

Shadow_of_Thrawn Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Read 'Beyond A boundary.' Its by a cricket player from the West Indies whose name I can't remember (CL James maybe?) It is one of the most boring books I have ever read, but does do a fair job of explaining the sport. I've done my best to forget most of it, so i can't really help with the question myself.
DarthTofu Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 So... in Cricket you have a very hard ball that is bowled towards you on the ground which you hit with a bat that looks kind of like an oar, and then people in the outfield wait trying to catch it even though its bowled on the ground? Got it 12/14/07Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la Not gone, merely marching far away

Got it Almost.. I'll now brilliantly expand: You have the 'crease' the area between the two sets of wickets inwhich the two batsman run to score runs if they haven't hit a four (over the boundary) or a six (in the air over the boundary). You have wicket keepers behind the current batsman (in bowels of six), and a few in-fielders arranged by the bowler dependant on how he's going to bowl. In essence it's almost like like Baseball but with the addition of elephant tranquilizers, and a couple of days. The currant ashes series between England and Australia has been going on now for a week or two, and is widely acclaimed as the most exciting in living memory. I'm wondering why. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif

Lord_La_forge Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 That's a fun game. I've heard the tibetan monk team is one of the best there is And I thought Wicket was an Ewok!!!!! Silly me
Mad78 Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 One gets bowled at the other gets shot at... not much difference. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance
Jahled Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Umm, elephant tranquilizers? I was being sarcastic. It's a very ssssllllloooowwwww game and lasts a whole day at the shortist. My fascination with watching other people playing a sport is tested if extra time is played in a football match. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
Krytos Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I remeber playing Cricket in High School - which involved the following. Sitting down on an oval, talking to each other, yelling at each other, sleeping, and if by some miraculous chance the ball came near us . . . throwing the ball at each other As for the rules, I never really cared for them too much - but here goes:First, there are two batters at a time. One stands at each end of the cricket pitch, however only one batts at a time. The bowler bowls (which is a lot harder than it looks) down the cricket pitch to the batter, the batter attempts to hit the ball. The batter is out if he misses the ball and it hits the stumps behind him, he accidently hits the stumps, the ball hits his leg and his leg is infront of the wicket (LBW - Leg before wicket), the batter hits the ball and is cought in the full and the batters are running and the ball is thrown and hits the wickets and the batter isn't behind the "crease" (a line on the pitch that's kinda like say you're barley). The batter scores by hitting the ball and running from one end of the pitch to the other (both batters run, and whoever is left standing at the batting end when you stop bats next). Each time both players run to the other end you score 1 run.You can also score runs by hitting the ball to the edge of the field. If it's on the full you get 6 runs, if it rolls to the boundry its 4 runs. The rest of the batting team sits back, drinks bear and text messages women (Stupid Shane Warne) and waits a long, long time before they go in to bat. The other teams stays on the field to catch the ball and throw it back to the pitch to try and get out the runners. That's as much as I know, except it is the most boring game I've ever played (However, I found some of the cricket highlights a good watch as of late) EDIT:Oh, I also forgot - like so many sports today - it's a rule to have at least one player to model some latest (and stupid) fasion for hairEg 1Eg 2 http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1778/reloadedbannerdu8.gifhttp://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1333/3dartistbanneranimationws1.gifhttp://img154.imageshack.us/img154/4026/rebellionbannerdi2.gif
Mad78 Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I still find soccer to be the most boring of all games. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance
Trejiuvanat Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Baseball would be the most boring one, for me. [Golf, Badminton, Cricket, -all 'sports' involving a vehicle with a motor- I do not even consider them sport] http://www.swrebellion.com/~jahled/Trej/banner.gif
Defender_16 Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Man, we never got to learn any cricket in Highschool. Only Lacrose (sp?) and football (The crazy kind where you need padding.) I still find soccer to be the most boring of all games. That's because it's a game you play not watch. Atleast that's my take on it after playing it ten years. (Man I'm out of shape. *huff* *puff* I should start playing again.)
Jahled Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I'll say but this about football, you have not really experianced the roar, the passion, the involvement unless you've been at least to a live game exchanged banter with opposing fans. I guess it's the same with other sports. Footy is the one for me. This is what I can't get to grips with cricket; because it's such a drawn out affair, the boredom threshold has been utterly exhausted even to kindle any traces of that rush when a wicket is taken or someone is boweled out or caught. http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
DarthTofu Posted August 28, 2005 Author Posted August 28, 2005 Okay, so now I officially understand cricket! Yeah! As for me, I'd have to vote basketball as most fun to play, with soccer as least fun to play, especially if you're on defense (I played it for eight years while I was little- either I was really good at defense, or coach wanted me as far away from the ball as possible by being full-back every game... ) But as for spectator sports- football all the way- hense marching band, meaning free tickets and transport to every game plus the occassional opportunity to make it onto local television- like with our first game! That was fun 12/14/07Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la Not gone, merely marching far away
Mad78 Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 I guess if someone offered me tickets for the world cup I would go. The WC is the only footy game i can watch without feeling bored. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Palpycard.gifhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a359/Mad78/Spamkinguserbarcopy.jpgCLICK HERE IT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!Click here is you like Trance
