Naval etiquet must be very different between the British and American navies. If a Captain were taking command of a ship once commanded by a Commander (doesn't happen often), th Captain would still refer to the Commander as Captain. The same would be true if a Captain were in a room with a Rear-Admiral and a Fleet Admiral. They would both be refered to as Admiral. Maybe in the past American officers were more touchy about their ranks than the Brits?
I didn't mean to say that there aren't any deviations from what I wrote, but the etiquet in the USA's Navy is pretty strict, traditional, and conservative. All-in-all, I can tell you for a fact, a royal pain in the ass! :x As a matter of fact, so is just about any other branch in the USA's Armed Forces (except, for the most part, the Coast Guard). It normally seems that many officers in the USA believe they are going to have their toes stepped on by a lower ranking officer or a higher ranking officer, so they keep their ranks, positions, and verbal address VERY guarded! Actually, it can get so bad that some officers press charges through the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) when a lower ranking person addresses them incorrectly (pretty bad, huh?). I think the best example, of course, is the fact that the Navy whined and whined when the Army created the rank of Brigaider General because they wanted another admiral rank (hence the halves of a Rear Admiral...and even that has some officers ticked!)! Not all persons are like this, but many are.

I suppose if a Commentary were done like 60 Standard Minutes it would be quite successful (and useful to boot).
I think it would be, 1)Useful and 2)More up-to-date than the commentaries by Dr. Saxton. It would also be open to more debate, something that is difficult for Dr. Saxton due to his personal responsibilties and the difficulty of contacting him. Also, I think with such an active community as this site, it would be easier to keep it present and full of fresh, new ideas (for instance, you tier idea!).

By the way, when Scathane gets back, we'll talk about your rank/position within the BEAK Imperium.

Another idea for the Rank Table's many levels is the idea of major pay levels. That each level is a new major level of pay (minor levels of pays within each level), so for instance [2,4] and [2,3] would be lower major pay levels of Sub-Lieutenant ([2,2]). Each level, though, also has it's own theoretical insignia to correspond with the pay level and, as needed, a rank is created for each level (as discussed earlier). A rather sloppily typed up theory, but a sound one, I believe...? This doesn't change anything said above, it simply adds to it.

That makes sence. Officers with more influence in the Imperial Admiralty would be given small promotions, nothing major, but enough to give them a boost in pay. This would be similar to a Post-Captain beeing given the rank of Colonel in the Royal Marines. He'd be recieving his regular pay as well as a Colonels pay, but he would only be performing his duties as Post-Captain.

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Precisley! :D Though I didn't have the British example in mind (call it ignorance on my part), I was going to site the fact that the pay grades of O-3 and O-4 in the USA's Armed Forces are the two pay grade levels at which officers stay the longest. Within those two seperate rank levels, there are three to four inner pay levels. For instance, an O-3 (Captain in the Army, Lieutenant in the Navy) on his record is called "Captain" (Army) until he or she passes the first two inner pay levels, at which time his record indicates that he or she is now known as a "Senior Captain". Again, it's not an official "rank", but it's a level of ranking that coincides with a different major level of pay. The same idea applies to the table where one could have a more senior level of any given rank as compared to a lesser one. Make sense?

Well, I suppose it depends on your preference. Do you want a Naval or Army rank? Do you want a rank that most people wouldn't think of, like something in the fighter corps? Imperial or Rebel, or something different?

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Dude...you were allowed to have your own rank at 2000. But no worries, CONGRATULATIONS! Hey, look around in the forums, there should be a '3000 Posts' thread. Or, you could always do what the rest of us did at a milestone: make your own celebration thread in the Outside Interests forum. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Guest Scathane
I solicit the help of the BEAK Imperium!

I would be more inclined to choose a naval rank.

We're at your disposal! What can we do you for?

 It's nice to see people know when to give in.

A few questions for you Mad:

1) Military or civilian?

2) If military, Rebel or Imperial? If civilian, politician or Jedi?

3) If military and Rebel or Imperial, which branch of service (i.e. Army, Navy, or Fighter)?

4) List anything else you would like.

Your rank and insignia, of course, don't have to be Star Wars...but you wouldn't want to do something else, now would you?

A few answers:

1) civillian

2) Jedi

As far as this goes, there are really only a four levels for Jedi:

    1) Padawan
    2)Knight
    3) Master (not on Council)
    4) Master (on Council)

You'll notice Jahled and mask have Jedi insignia...they could probably help you with that.

4) COuld we perhaps put a bit of Rapora Wars in there?
I know nothing of the Rapora Wars. You'll have to talk to Steller about that.
