Lord_La_forge
Just saw this movie and want to hear your thoughts on it.I'm very curious about the comments of people who actually read the Douglas Addams book! (Cause I didn't )
Jahled
The books are a must read, without a doubt. The last time I had Christian 'missionaries' on my door step they got invited in and left the house with a copy of the book.* The film I haven't seen; and in truth because all the papers that raved about it are by and large publications I don't like, and those that didn't warm to it, the reverse.... Being English though I have had the pleasure of the original BBC adaption, which despite a low budget captured the humor of the books wonderfully. I also have the radio adaptions on tape if you're interested Forge dude! *And a long lecture by a mate where they couldn't get a word in edgeways, which made a refreshing change.... http://www.jahled.co.uk/smallmonkeywars.gif
MDk
I allways thought, it would be impossible to make a good film adopting this book; I was wrong. The humor did chance a little bit into slapstick, I think a little bit like Monty Pythons Flying Circus. But of course it is more suitable for a film this way. In my oppinion it is quite a very good film, perhaps not an oscar candidate but very good. By the way: This new film is it an UK- or US-production? All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him. (Sun Tsu - The Art of War)
SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted June 24, 2005 SWR Staff - Executive Share Posted June 24, 2005 I think its a joint US/UK production, according to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/It was distributed by Touchstone (US) but filmed in UK. It came out in UK and US at the same time. The epitome of low-budget was the second head on Zaphond's shoulder . The original radio series was good as well. The books are inspired. I've just remembered i've got a signature! Stellar_Magic
I loved the film and have read the books. Unfortunately you have to have something of a taste for british humor at some points. It reminded me a lot of monty python... Thumper
I read the books in preparation for seeing the movie and I got instantly hooked. As for the movie, I saw it three times within the first two weeks it was out here, so yeah, I really liked it. The movie had some parts that were not in the book (I want that gun!! ). There were some parts in the book that could have been explained better in the movie (like the whole towel thing), but for the most part I think they did a good job for people who hadn't read the books. I'm basing a lot of that on my dad, since he hadn't read the books and I took him to see it, and he was able to follow it and enjoyed it. I can't imagine how many little Easter eggs there are in that movie, and I really hope the DVD comes with a director's commentary. Things like hearing the horses neighing in the background when Arthur was talking to the descendant of Genghis Khan--it's explained in the books, but in the movie that's the only hint you get of it. In the US at least, there was an extra little scene about halfway through the end credits. And now I'm going to have the opening credits song in my head for the rest of the day. -Thumper TIE pilots shake at the sound of my name! ...Hey, wait! You're not supposed to be shaking with laughter! Which way did they go? How many of them were there? How fast were they going? I must find them! I am their LEADER! Darth_Rob
I thought it was an awful movie. Just the whole concept behind it was too bizzare, and this is coming from a huge Sci-Fi fan. Of course it was bizzare. That is the reason why it was so funny. By the way, I don't think that was a science fiction film but a parody. All warfare is based on deception. SWR Staff - Executive Evaders99 Posted June 28, 2005 SWR Staff - Executive Share Posted June 28, 2005 Really, don't go to the movie without reading the books. If you don't like the concept from the books, you won't like the movie either. That being said, I don't know anyone that actually dislikes Hitchhiker's. I'm pretty sure its something that everyone knows about, or at least heard the name. References to 42, Babelfish, Trillian.. you'll find references in everyday things. Eko
Yeah, the books do help explain it. But I was introduced through the BBC audio tapes (yeah that was a few years ago, tapes!) and I got the picture very fast. Movies do generally leave out some of the story when transferred from another source, so that could explain why it was a little hard to get. I've just remembered i've got a signature! DarthTofu
I don't know about some of the stuff in the movie, but I think it might have come from the original Radio show. Some of it was just too well-thought-out to have been made by the destroyers of great literature... I mean Disney, my bad. Dinsey, right. Anyway, I'm not sure what I thought of it. Wasn't nearly random or true to the books enough for my taste- and they cut the piece with coming onto the heart of gold down to "Ah! I'm a sofa! now I'm me again". I liked bushes with eight headed kippers and such. Last thing that annoyed me was the stupid "Let's get a bite at the Resteraunt at the end of the Universe!""Not that anyone cares, but the resteraunt is on the other side of the Universe" thing. If you read the books, you know why I'm mad. 12/14/07Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la Not gone, merely marching far away
the_mask
I was actually waiting for the infinite number of Monkeys, but I guess that would've taken forever I liked the movie. Saw it ~2 weeks ago and the opening music was an homage to the old BBC version http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/5183/animated9pn.gifhttp://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1778/reloadedbannerdu8.gifhttp://www.swrebellion.com/images/banners/rebellionbanner02or6.gif
DarthTofu
I see... Kinda confused me, watching a musical by dolphins and all... Call me synical, but I think they should have just followed the book word for word. Though that would be rather difficult without giving the narrator a huge part, seeing as there are the whitty things like "A bypass is something that allows people to travel from point A to point B much faster, and for people from point B to travel to point A much faster, leaving the people in point C which is in between points A and B to wonder what the hell is so great about point A that everyone from point B wants to be there, and what the hell is so great about B that everyone from point A wants to be there. Mr. Proser wanted to be at point D..." and so on. 12/14/07Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la Not gone, merely marching far away
