I have version 3.1. It never let me down. But i think i shall upgrade on of these days.

Yup, it seems that the odd-numbered versions are more stable

 

4 was pretty unstable and I heard incompatible with XP

But as long as 5.0 works, I won't touch this running system, hehe.

7 looks awesome and is more than just a "cosmetic" update. It has a lot of new tools for low and high poly modelling, advanced texturing and even has an inbuilt tools for normal mapping (which by the way isn't just for games - it allows you to do some pretty fancy stuff that bump or displacement mapping can't do well for a real textured look - like for skin, leather or any real form of deformation to an object like cracks)

I've always found that 0.1 versions fixed the major crashing issues with the program . . . however, as for the latest version (5 and after) I havn't had problems - and even with Discreets new service packs, I havn't even noticed any difference in stability . . ah, in a positive way

Also if I construct the model in gmax, can I then export it to Blender to render? (rhymes!) Razz Or would it be worth more to just learn blender in the first place and forget gmax?

sure you can export.

You can even use some of the specialized renders.

OK, cool, so how would I go about exporting from gmax to Blender? Is there some sort of file conversion needed?

Now that's also something I'd like to know, but I think Mad meant to start with Blender altogether.

Question for Mad/Mask:

 

I've basically got both Blender and Gmax now, which would it be better to focus on, based on beginner status, usefulness from the persepctive of Rebellion and the compatability (ease of transfer, i.e. not having to relearn it all) with a possible later move to 3dsmax if I decide to invest in it?

I find GMax great for modelling but never really tried Blender. I suggest you check some online tutorials.

Take your time. The RebEdit side of this is having a few setbacks. I'll give a new list of models soon. Thanks again guys.

Actually Adthrawn, the "Invisible Hand" was not an ordinary Trade Federation Cruiser, (like the last one from these pictures) it was more like a heavily-modified cruiser, with fighter-carrying capability. I just finished my "Invisible-Hand" model, (needs some more textures) and you can have it for your TC anytime.

The Venator ship looks good Mad78, although I also think its abit narrow

It still needs some last minute changes, I'll fix the watch tower too...
