Well, it is better to read them all - but if you don't want to or can't locate them all (like me) Here's what I suggest:

Vector Prime

Dark Tide 1 (optional)

Dark Tide 2

I havn't read any of the Agents of Chaos series - so can't say there

Balance Point

Recovery (becaues it comes with Star By Star)

Edge of Victory II

Star By Star

Enemy Lines I & II (no real story impact - though a good, fun read)

Traitor

Force Hertic Triligy (Havn't read them, though I've heard they're good)

The Final Prophecy

The Unifying Force

Even some of them, you don't need to read - but it makes things less complicated

Here's what I recommend:

Vector Prime - you have to start somewhere.. besides Salvatore does a decent job

Dark Tide I & II - if you like the Stackpole X-Wing books

Star by Star - the pinacle of the NJO series, must read

Traitor - probably the strangest SW book you've ever read. If you like Shatterpoint, its the same style

Destiny's Way - definite turning point in the NJO timeline...

The Final Prophecy - just because it leads into the final book nicely

The Unifying Force - a good end to things...

So that's it. I'm not saying the other books are bad, they are worth reading for other plots. The worst I'd have to say is Balance Point - honestly it doesn't even deserve a hardback. Another Kathy Tyers book that just doesn't do justice to the Star Wars name.

A nice list: I'd add the Enemy Lines Duology just for some completeness and for Allston's style.

Force Heritic Series are good, I'm almost done with them. I read every book in the series.

Force Heretic has the search for Zonama Sekot. And has some Stuff going on with Tahiri and Riina.

Dont read the Kevin J Anderson series. I think it was Jedi Academy or something.

I have so many gripes with his work. I dont like how he created a Jedi that is supposedly stronger than Luke (Kyp Durron).

Way too many super weapons and dumbing down of ship firepower. (Suncrusher) and the stupid Darksaber. Ugh I hated those books.

Destiny's Way was extremely exciting/thrilling, ... BUT it promised sooo much more that never followed in the remaining books. I was quite disappointed  . The "new Rebel Alliance" thing showed great promise but was never developed. It seemed like a neat thread to sustain the story, but it never ever came up again. What's the point in that? It also seemed that all of the neat "technological" breakthroughs of the New Republic/Galatic Federation all of a sudden were neutralized just after 1 book. The Chiss never got to get into any real "action", they were just "there". To me it seems (from the Thrawn Duology), the Chiss were already preparing for the Vong waaay in advance of the New Republic. Then they never do anything spectacular. What a let down. But this story line, like a long Tom Clancy novel, raps up very quickly before you know it. Oh well all good things must come to an end.
Finally, after years of hard work I am the Supreme Sith Warlord! Muwhahahaha!! What?? What do you mean "there's only two of us"?

Speaking as someone currently reading the "edge of Victory" duology, I can't offer much. But I can say this: Salvatore is a really crappy author (He ignores all Star Wars physics from the past. For pity's sake, people go to hyperspace while still in a planet's atmosphere!) but you still have to read Vector Prime. I would not recomend Balance Point. It moved ridiculously slowly for me, with very few characters other than Luke, Mara, Jacen, jaina, and Anakin. It isn't too important: It has some very trivial items that occur, such as a new leader and a death of a very minor character, but nothing more.

Salvatore is a good author, especially his Forgetten Realms books. Vector Prime is not the strongest book, but I don't believe it is because of Salvatore. He was told what to write basically, and he did it.

Spoiler:

He gave Chewie a noble death, which in my book is a good thing

Vector Prime, being the start of things, could have been a better book. But I think he left it up to the next authors to expand from his basis. It's hard being the first :)

I also thought his Attack of the Clones novelization was better than the movie.

"I also thought his Attack of the Clones novelization was better than the movie." That isn't exactly making the strongest argument for his case :) just about anything can beat attack of the clones. Though I read Revenge of the Sith Novelization by him and it was pretty good. I just felt that he made too much up to fit his purpous, sort of like Zahn with his Vorskners and ysalismari and all.
