Alienware makes Star Wars-branded PCs

By Keith Shaw

Network World Fusion, 04/20/05

We're pretty cynical about most Star Wars-related merchandising (Jar Jar beach towel, anyone?), but this got our fanboy juices flowing.

Alienware has created a Star Wars-branded desktop PC (the Alienware Aurora: Star Wars Edition) and will give one away on April 24 at the Celebration III event in Indianapolis (expected to attract more than 30,000 SW fans). The winner will get to choose from either the Dark Side or the Rebel Alliance models (my money is on the Dark Side).

The PCs include AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 processors that include its Cool'n'Quiet technology to help maintain a more quiet desktop in the high-performance gaming PC market, Alienware says. The actual PCs will be on sale in the U.S. "in the near future," the company added.

Wow, now those are some nice PC cases! If I could buy just the case I'd definitely go out and get one... assuming they were made available anywhere but Celebration III. Normally I'm against Alienware, simply because they make people think that their systems are better than what you can get elsewhere (you can build them yourself, you're just paying them to put them together), but I must give them cudos for their fine work!.

I wonder if I could get something like that put on my computer?

History is on the move, Captain. Those who cannot keep up with it will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way will not watch at all.

Umm..yeah.. it's a case with some Star Wars drawing. What's so good about it? Now if it had a Darth Vader helmet embedded to it, similar to that skull case we saw last year, then I'd be all over it ;).

As for a drawing? You could probably get one cheaper custom made.

If you look around on the internet, you can get any peice of equipment that Alienware can, and for cheaper sometimes. When you pay alienware for one of their comps, all you do is pay them top put it together, and put it in one of their cases, which I was never all that impressed with. Basically, its the Jaguar of computers. Looks nice, but you can get something better for cheaper.

But I will say the design is pertty cool. I <3 the dark side.

I once knew a great man. Nothing got to him, and he always smiled. May he forever rest in peace, knowing fully well that his freinds shall remember him.

Yep, you pay for the labor costs. That's pretty much how it works. If you don't want to pay for the service, than you can learn how to build it yourself. It's only bad because you're your own tech support :)

I'm still waiting for a BIOS chip from the MB company so I can install a Celeron in this PC.

I don't understand, your motherboard doesn't have a BIOS chip?

This BIOS chip is for a new MB I bought in Tigerdirect.com as part of a bundle. The irony of this is the processor. They cend me a Celeron type D and the MB BIOS doesn't recognize the CPU.

The irony of life. :arrow::roll:

Um, but you're sure, that the processor fits onto your MB's socket ?

If so, do you have an old processor, that fits with which you could flash the BIOS ?

I think he means the CMOS chip ;).
 I know, but replacing that with a compatible one would be the same, as flashing the old one, IMHO.

Of course, if the cpu socket won't fit the new cpu, then this wouldn't achieve anything, though.

Mad, just nod and make Hmmm sounds

Nope. I bought it in Tiger and since is so new, my actual CPU doesn't fit.

You got that right, my bad.

No, I don't have another CPU to flash the CMOS, that's why I'm waiting for a new CMOS.
